Leaving an unlocked car would provide homeless guys with a great place to stay for the night.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CNN) -- Crime-obsessed South Africans have a powerful new weapon with which to stop likely criminals: the car flamethrower. Casting a man-high fireball, reportedly with no damage to the paint, the Blaster has been placed on 25 South African vehicles since its introduction last month. At 3,900 rand ($655), it offers a cheap, dramatic defense against carjackers. It has yet to be deemed illegal. South African courts allow killing if convinced that it's in self-defense. The defense is not unheard of. In last year's 13,000 carjackings, criminals often brandished weapons or used them with little provocation.
The Blaster squirts liquefied gas from a bottle in the automobile's trunk through two nozzles, located under the front doors. The gas is then ignited by an electric spark, with fiery consequences. Both sides flame at the same time, regardless of whether the attack is coming from just one side of the vehicle, or whether passersby are on the other side. But the breadth and depth of blast can be modified according to individual preference.
Fire blinds, not kills, maker assures
Blaster inventor Charl Fourie, 33, disputed concerns that the flamethrower could burn someone to death. "My personal feeling is that it would definitely blind a person. He will never see again," he said. Firefighters, medical personnel and the police agree 100 percent "that it will never kill a person," Fourie asserted. "This is definitely non-lethal.... A person is not going to stand there for a minute while you roast him. It will fend off the attacker, and that's the end of it." Fourie has filed an international patent application. He anticipates thousands of orders nationally and from abroad. "The demand is huge," he said.
First customer a Johannesburg police official
The first buyer, Police Superintendent David Walkley of Johannesburg's crime intelligence unit, is satisfied the Blaster is legal, provided it is used correctly. "It depends entirely on the circumstances and whether you can justify self-defense," he said. "Yes, there are certain risks in using it, but there are also risks in not having anything at all."
I'm sure it can be rewired into her car alarm system...

Yes, of course she would take the faceplate out but leave the door unlocked, so that the thieves wouldn't bust the window which would be worth more then the contents of the car.
A radio theif wouldn't bust the window if the face place was gone. The deterrent to not getting a broken window is not an unlocked door, but not having anything to steal. Thus, leaving the door unlocked does nothing to prevent the stereo theif, it only invites car theives.

A friend of mine got broken into the other day, had a brand new car with a nice stereo. It was a real shame. She had her door locked, but left the face of her stereo on.
When the theives came in they smashed the window and took the stereo.
One of the ideas she came up with after all this is to leave the door open so that next time if they took the stereo, the stereo would only cost 100 dollars to replace instead of a 700 dollar door window. She would take the faceplate also, so that people wouldn't see the faceplate.
What do you think of this? I think it's a pretty clever idea.
My dad had a convertible, he would generally leave the top down/door unlocked because the cost to replace the roof was more then whatever would get stolen.

Ohh that SUCKS!!! I hate car criminals. They're just causing a lot of damage to individuals and also mental grief.
I had my car broken into ... about a year ago? I made a thread about it. It _sucked_. I had the faceplate off as well, but it didn't stop the thieving bastards to break into it anyway and see if there's anything else. Well, even when faceplate wasn't on, they still took the player away (and all my CDs, which were in the trunk that you could get in inside the car but you couldn't see them outside so you had to break in just to find them).
So the aftermath, stolen player, about 30 original CDs stolen, the middle console smashed (because they took the player, they had to break the middle console as well). AND a broken lock.
Aftermath, damages 1000 euros. And I had to drive around for few weeks without a lock and you could see that the lock is broken and I couldn't take it inside for the nights etc...
Totally sucked. Just because some bastard wanted to check inside, maybe there's something in, even though there wasn't (except CDs in the trunk). AND that thieving criminal was fairly neat when he broke my lock and stuff, didn't cause extra damage. But still... 1000 euros, plus I felt violated also.
And since these kinds of crimes happen so much especially in the cities, the cops don't even encessarily come to check it out, it's just "so what got stolen and broken? Ok. We'll get back to you if your player is found". Meaning that they'll check the serial numbers when they bust some drug dealers and see what matches and what doesn't, so when this kind of thing happens to you, no one really has the time or interest to take any care of it. So it double sucks.
And no, don't leave the door unlocked.
In da butt.
