I'll check this thread again when thousands in Venezuala are despairing in sorrow from having their children dead and their civil rights trampled. Something that ALWAYS happens under the rule of dictators (100% so far since the dawn of man). We'll see what you have to say then Kid.

He won't have to. After awhile, he'll be viewed as an institution and people will automatically vote for him. Like when FDR was elected for a fourth term even though he was dying.

THAT was a carefully hidden secret.

Also unemployment was pretty low at the time, and the war had gone pretty well, all things considered. And at that, the GOP did better in '44 than in '40, IIUC, and better in '40 than in '36. They were trending up.

Have, say, a disaster on D-Day, or Henry Wallace decide to run to the Dems left in '44 instead of waiting till '48 (and a failed D-Day could well make him think thats a good idea) and its anybodys election. Maybe.

No, he's not Hitler. There are some similarities, however, in that both Hitler and Chavez led failed coups before gaining power via the electoral system (though Chavez won outright and Hitler got in indirectly). Chavez has said some nutty things, though nowhere near as nutty as Hitler.

I'm actually pleased in a detached way that Venezuela has a leader who is at least trying to help the poor. I remain concerned (again, from thousands of miles away, with no personal stake in any of this) that he is showing the same tendencies many others have before... and fifty years from now he'll still be ruling Venezuela. And it won't be a good thing.

Again, if I'm wrong, great. No skin off my nose.

I agree the analogy doesn't really mean anything. There are similiarities, but they are more different than similar.

I didn't know it was meth that he was into.

Actually, they probably may have. You forget, but Reagan had insanely high popularity ratings right before leaving office. If he could run again, and wanted to, he'd probably win in a landslide.

                  • I say it's too soon to say if Chavez is another Hitler or not. Saddam Hussein was no Hitler either, but that didn't stop him from killing thousands of innocents. Chavez is becoming a dictator and that's all you need to know.

                    Arrian,
It's true it would be a good thing for you to be wrong, but you won't be. It's never happened. There's no such thing and never will be as a good dictator. Unless he actually loses an election or steps down (after a term or two) I won't have any reason to believe this is going anywhere good.

I fail to see what that has to do with anything? First of all the situation in Iraq has nothing to do with they system of government in the U.S., Second, the trouble there is being caused by facist, religious extremeists, not by the party in power oppressing its own people.
