Watch Fullmetal Alchemist sometime (or even Naruto...hell, One Piece is better), and then DBZ. There is no character development on DBZ. They're all utterly two-dimensional, and the dialogue consists of: "My power level is ten times yours! I'm going to beat you easily, hahaha!" (long pause against still shot of cratered battlefield) "Grr...yes it is, but no, you're not!" (long pause against still shot of character's face) "Yes I am!" over and over for twenty minutes with commercial breaks in between. It's just BAD. I'll drop the subject now, but I advise you to think about seeing it again. Or at least ditch the avatar. You might as well have a "Dan Quayle for President" bumper sticker up there, it's painful to look at.

What's your problem with the guy having fond memories of a show he enjoyed a long time ago?

Should I begin to disabuse you of your fondness for the elder women folk in your family by describing how they were terrible in bed?

fifth re DL dances: theres a certain logic to the DL dance. It was, IIRC, originally done when a SETTLER appeared in the OT. The logic is that most folks would post on topic long enough to not be a settler anymore before hitting the OT. I know I did. So its presumed a settler in OT is a DL. Now its sometimes the case that someone just finds the OT in a search, without playing a game, or is recommended by a friend. Or that they lurk in the On topic boards, but hardly post. I dont know how common that really is.

Interestingly enough, the noobie treatment was given to me when I first posted a thread in OT after having been on Poly for a long while and with a few more posts than many.

What's really interesting is that it was UR and Imran who led the charge in reducing the thread to a smoking ruin of DL dancing.

And it is dying. I'm not talking about the recent protest but about the steady and depressing decline of traffic over the past few years. CFC is rising. We're falling. Something is causing it.

Besides the whole google thing, have a look at the two homepages, particularly the layouts. 'Poly covers more games, but the layout is confusing. wtf is productions and services, wtf is polycast and age of nations, I'm a newbie, I don't care. CFC is neat and tidy, in order, one after another, clear links to the most important info on each game.

then have a look at the two download sections. If i were new to 'Poly I wouldn't even know where it was for a start, directory doesn't sound like downloads, CFC has a "downloads" link under each civ heading, or the big "DOWNLOADS" link and "GALLERY" at the top.

So i finally make it to the 'Poly directory, but whereTF are the Civ4 downloads? You can't see any Civ4 links, first you have to click on one of the other headings like "Files".

OK so they both work the same once you find them, but the damage is done, the feeling of quality is much higher at CFC right from the first visit, and that sticks in peoples minds for their next visit, or choosing to join a forum.

I dunno if this is being worked on, but I've read these same complaints from different people (newbies in some cases) for the last two years at least.

I have seen sites where the posters get fed up with the owners/moderatorship and leave. I just don't want poly to be one of them.

The poly.net front page could definitely do with a redesign, that's for sure. It needs more dynamic information, more content, and a recognition that the majority of newbies arriving are coming for one thing - Civ4 - not all the other stuff that's crowding out the front page.

agreed. It seems we don't have enough help proficient in web design.

I might suggest another color scheme as well.

Civ 4 should be our primary focus to bring in more people. And should get top billing on the front page. Everything else takes a backseat. And more civ4 content is of course needed. A more intuitive downloads section.

I believe that would break Poly's "no insulting family" rule. And raise a number of questions about how you knew that as well...

I assume you have never seen DBZ. It is bad enough that having a DBZ avatar effectively discredits all his posts on intellectual grounds in much the same way as a Pat Buchanan avatar would discredit them on moral grounds. While I often disagree with him, I don't think he's at that level, the level of the DBZ fan. For one thing, he still spells most words correctly, even if he does misuse one particular literary term. He hasn't seen the show in years, he deserves better.

More than that, however, his use of the avatar endorses DBZ. It says "DBZ is cool. DBZ is quality entertainment." And that, NYE, is a lie. It is a damnable lie. That show is scientifically proven to suck ass to an off-the-scale degree. And I'm not going to stand for it. He's free to have whatever avatar he wishes, of course, but I am also free to remind him that it's a terrible show. I've overplayed it, I acknowledge, and what I posted was meant to be my last criticism on this board. You've forced my hand.
