The stated goals were to 1) make it harder for illegals to find jobs in the US ... The bill would have accomplished those goals.

Oh I believe you. I'm just amused you worded it "decided we were engaging in personal attacks" instead of "recognized the obvious."
I don't speak for Ming. He told me the personal attacks had to end and that similiar PMs were sent to the other parties.

And you base that on...?

1986 didn't do anything for increasing how the law was enforced. No national data base was created so employers could varify if documents were falsified or real; no improved IDs were created. It was entirely different then the proposed bill.
You know this though; you just keep repeating the same false claims like a broken record.

Here's what I think. Seal the borders, give the guards authorization to fire at whomever starts across.
At the same time, those who are in, can stay in; provided they declare themselves and are given an identification card like any other person.
I don't know about California, but in Texas an i.d. is required, either a driver's license or other.
What you're not understanding is everyone uses fake documents now days and the employers know the documents are fake but the police have to prove it which is almost impossible since there is no independent way of verifying that documents are real. The new data base would have made it the employers responsibility to check documents against the data base so if an illegal was found working for them they couldn't claim they didn't know. That's now out the window.
The real goal of the bill was to further alienate the GOP from Hispanics. It has been immensely successful. Shame that they're gonna vote Democrat though.

How many immigrants does the USA need per year?
It depends on what you mean by need. To prevent population from falling due to people that leave the country every year? about 150K/Year.
Dirt poor people aren't going to move to America in the tens of millions once there are no more jobs left for them to take. Don't overstate the problems with open borders.
There are no such thing as "no more jobs", they'll simply have to work for a lower wage then the guy who came in ahead of them.

I would rather businesses hire illegals than not hire anyone.
Why would you say something so odd?
No, it's not meant as a rhetorical question. You wish.

Have you even read the act, Oerdin? Or even the history surrounding it? Amnesty (which is similar to what was proposed today) was passed with the promise of enforcement to be paired with it (and yes there are provisions for the ID improvements you were speaking of earlier in the '86 bill) but there wasn't the political will to follow through on it.

I would rather they not hire anyone rather than resort to slavery.

Immigrants who came in through open borders would work for the minimum wage or higher. Since their entry into the US wasn't illegal, there's no reason for them not to report employers who try to break the minimum wage law.
