The US has pretty low unemployment. I suspect that our economy can find uses for a lot more workers.

Yes, the bill created a federal data base which all employers would have to check SSNs and pictures against when they hire new people. It also included "real idea" which was supposed to be federal ID standards which made IDs much more difficult to fake.

The right wing ignored all of this in their zeal to attack the brown people.

So you're saying a Federal data base which employers are legally required to check to insure their new employee is here legally is a bad thing? That making IDs more difficult to fake is also a bad thing?

Let's face it. Republicans came down against this because it motivates a lot of people to scream "We're being invaded by the Mexicans!" and "We have to deport them all" plus the Republican political class didn't want 12 million new voters who really identify mainly with Democrats. Of course the sad fact is Hispanics disproportionately vote Democratic because Republics keep acting racist against them but claiming they really aren't racist.

Here's what I think. Seal the borders, give the guards authorization to fire at whomever starts across.
At the same time, those who are in, can stay in; provided they declare themselves and are given an identification card like any other person.
I don't know about California, but in Texas an i.d. is required, either a driver's license or other.

The original thread was deleted, against my will, because the mods decided we were engaging in personal attacks.

Oh I believe you. I'm just amused you worded it "decided we were engaging in personal attacks" instead of "recognized the obvious."

The stated goals were to 1) make it harder for illegals to find jobs in the US and 2) to get 12 million people out of the shadows, to pay back taxes, and to find a path to earned legalization. The bill would have accomplished those goals.

The new national data base and "real ID" cards would have made it impossible for employers to claim they didn't know workers were illegal and the earned citizenship path would have taken 12 million people out of the shadows and on to the path to legalization. It would have accomplished all of the goals set out.
