Most schools don't have these ethnic classes until you get into college and even then they're mostly just elective classes which only dumb ****s who don't care about their future unemployment take as a major. Essentially people who don't have the intelligence or discipline needed to major in a real science nor the passion needed for art or a some other employable major. My university required us to take one class in "multicultural studies" which was very clearly a circle jerk designed to justify worthless ethnic studies "professors" continuing employment.

Ethnic studies has absolutely no place in the pre-college education of students or at least it shouldn't so if students are being taught racist bull****e to make them "feel better about themselves" then that is a sign that the school has already failed at real academics and is trying to justify their failure by pushing racist crap. Pre-college should be about teaching the basics and if people want to get indepth about bogus ethnocentric pseudo-history like Afrocentrism then they can waste their own money and time in college doing it.

Part of my cure for America is to stop all student aid for space wasters taking worthless majors like ethnic studies and use the money to fully pay the tuition for students who are not to lazy to study real economically useful majors like science and engineering. If you want to learn basket weaving the do it on your own dime.

    • I don't see Egypt in the standards. I think they might have put it in sixth grade or something.

edit: Yes it is taught in 6th instead in CA.

Shove it, Oerdin. History is important, if not as "economically viable" as engineering.

"Let's all be colorblind" bugs you?

"Color doesn't matter anymore" is something else - that's not the case, unfortunately. But you disagree with the idea of trying to be colorblind? Do explain.

I love humor. This bit I didnt appreciate.

I love half elves. Theyre great. What it said to me was that these distinctions are artificial, and ergo meaningless, and so basing teaching on them is laughable.

Im all fine with a colorblind state, and of course support that as a goal. (Im not sure I think every individual should be precluded from consciousness of their physical ancestry, though) I find the attempt, in discussing current policies to improve things in a society where race does matter, to invoke colorblindess problematic. IOW I think race conscioous policies may be necessary, since race does still matter. To do so by minimizing the significance of race in society, I find worse.

We can't be stupid. Well maybe some white engineer types can, but not when you are a minority.

Then I would argue you misread me.

I was operating under the (mistaken) assumption that there were seperate curriculums *in the same school* for different races. I think it was pretty clear from my posts that I believed that to be the case (based upon Kid's posts, which honestly I think were a tad confusing).

In THAT context, I poked at something I thought was absurd: the possibility that a kid attending such a school might have to pick a race and attend the classes for that race. Get it now?

Given that all of that was a misunderstanding, whaddya say we let it go.

Im not sure I think every individual should be precluded from consciousness of their physical ancestry, though
I hope that it's possible to be aware but avoid the various pitfalls of being consumed by it.

If that's the goal, why is it wrong to bring it up?

I think we run a real risk of harping too much on race, and perpetuating the problem.

Really?? I am surprised. I guess being a parent, having subbed, I just assumed people had more awareness of the public schools. I dont usually read Kid too closely, and coming in I assumed he was talking about choosing to teach more about minorities in his classroom, or a school district with lots of minorities modifiying its curriculum for everyone.

                        Ok, now I understand.

I've been out of the public school system for 13 years. I have no kids, and the first kid produced by my friends is 6 months old. I have two friends who are teachers, but neither teaches in an inner city environment.

Since Kidicious was a teacher, I was taking what he said at face value, and I was confused. Whether it was the fault of his wording or my reading comprehension... meh, doesn't matter. Point is I was wrong.

I don't think it's being perpetuated as much as it is being made aware of. We could all ignore it and say nothing, but it's still gonna be there.
