Well they were already Maoist, in a way, when they were black nationalists, or at least when they were all black nationalists. Some of them became communists later. The thing about them is that they were not united in opinion.

Maoists claim to be Marxists, and while I would argue that their interpretation of Marx is incorrect, I'm not willing to go so far as to say they aren't Marxists.

The were both Black Nationalists and Maoists, back when you could reasonably argue that there was a revolutionary and progressive element to Black nationalism. Kid is correct that you had differences of opinions and some were more nationalists and some more communist. Some were just opportunists. Fred Hampton was definitely a communist, while Eldridge Cleaver was a nationalist (and a total scumbag, rapist, kidnapper, etc.). Etc.

The New Black Panther Party is a seperate organization, hoping to take the easy path to glory by stealing the name of the Black Panthers. None of the old Panther leadership has anything good to say about the New BP.

A good measure of the difference between the two groups is that quite a few of the original Panthers were murdered by government agents or framed for crime they could not possibly have committed (for instance, Geronimo Ji Jaga was 600 miles away at the time of a double murder for which he spent nearly 30 years in jail before being sprung, Fred Hampton and Mark Clark were murdered by the Chicago PD in their beds, etc). The SWAT unit was invented specifically to deal with the Panthers.

Anyone ever heard of these new Panthers even getting looked at funny by the police? These guys are all about Black business, Islam, and off the wall conspiracy theories.
