I didn't say anything about Falwell up until now. Mind you, its an outsider's view.

People don't hate Falwell simply because he was a fundamentalist Christian, but because he was an evil little man who, unfortunately, had the power to influence people. I'm not sure what the extent of his influence was. He certainly had the power to corrupt people's minds with his retarded beliefs (I'm not saying that Christianism is retarded. I'm saying that Falwell's version of it was.) And these beliefs could have had a direct impact on these people's lives and of the lives of people around them.

In the 1960s he encouraged nearby counties to close their school systems rather than submit to desegregation. A couple of counties responded to his call. Most of them reopened within a year, but one county, Prince Edward, kept its school doors closed for 7 years. Imagine how many kids were harmed by being deprived of an education. Most of them would be about my age or slightly younger. I've encountered some of them and its easy to see how they've been harmed. Most of them are retired and on welfare by now because its hard for someone who has had only a grade school education to keep up in the workplace.

The worst Falwell seems to have done is disagree with many of you on political/cultural issues and have the gall to build an organization devoted to furthering his views on those issues. Seems like acceptable behavior in a democracy, but I'm not sure how many of you actually respect democracy deep down...

He was asked if sick people should be allowed the use of medical pot... he said no. Did he "order" the deaths of sick people who needed it to prolong their lives? No, but he is responsible for his efforts to keep it illegal for them to get medicine they needed. He supports a drug war that produces a higher homicide rate, but did he pull the trigger? How about his rants against various groups targeted by fellow bigots for violence? Shall we go onto his promotion of our foreign policy? Yikes, the body count is going up...

Did I smile when I heard he had died? No, but dont expect his victims to give him the eulogy.
