  • Wouldn't something like this fall under free speech which is exactly protected in this kind of democracy?

I'm not saying it should be illegal. I'm just saying that it's ill-advised and that anyone who engages in such behavior has a tenuous respect for democracy and/or grasp of what "evil" really is.

I'd be surprised if all the people condemning the cheers for Falwell's passing have not let out a cheer or two themselves on these pages for the demise of other controversial figures in recent years.

Yet Dead Pools are still considered in bad taste.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

I won't begrudge you your assessment of fecal content since it was typed in disgust after reading a Wikipedia article on Hiroshima and then all the vacuous hate in this thread. I'm wondering though, if the stereotypical view of Texans' one-dimensional thinking is commonly embraced by its inhabitants? I can see certain circumstances where it would have its merits, but global-scale politics and philosophy don't seem among them to me, as Ferrell's recent appearances here should indicate...

Um, since Kuci didn't cite the source- that was from a web comic called XKCD. I take it you know what a strawman argument is...?

There's a huge difference between criticizing someone for their views and calling them "evil" while reveling in their death.

Since you missed my last post, let me reiterate.

Bigotry can be a source of evil. You cannot argue with a serious face that Falwell was NOT bigoted.

                      • In addition to that, just because someone has died does not necessitate that a) you feel bad about it, b) you feel sorry for the family, c) care about it, and d) pull your punches when discussing the man's life and works.

I don't know if he was or wasn't. I have no idea what the man felt in his heart.

                          • When I was 10 years old I built a crystal radio from a kit. I would listen to whatever stations I could raise at night. Because the radio was rather weak and Falwell's show was repeated on a large country station in Roanoke at about the time I went to bed I sometimes had no choice other than his show to listen to. Trust me, Jerry Falwell was a bigot. One positive effect of his association with the GOP is that at some point he was told to flat out lose the racism. He went on to oppose women's rights and when that became a political embarassment he moved on to gay-bashing. The man was a serial bigot.

                            • Calling someone "evil" disposes of all pretense of civil discussion. If someone is "evil" there is no need to listen to what they have to say
How would you know they're evil if you dont listen? Thats the problem with your argument, people have listened to Falwell and he has made sure as many people as possible have heard him

You had difficulty understanding his obviously blatant racist, sexist, and homophobic statements!?!?
