  • That would have been a waste because it is duplicating GPS. The EU spends so little on defense anyway. The least it can do is spend it wisely on complementary items.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

€5-6 billion to protect us against the Pentagon's whims is a reasonable price. We waste more money on projects with negative benefits.

      • It wouldn't do a very good job at protecting you against the Pentagon's whims, IMO. If we degraded the high-resolution signal over Europe you'd have much bigger problems to deal with.

        • The GPS signal, you mean? All the more reason to construct an alternative system it'd seem. This time properly state-funded on non-commercial base, as Dan prefers.

Have you sniffed too much burnt toilet paper ? The system is supposed to be an alternative to the american system - actually with higher precision.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

              What?

The point is that in the case that you'd actually use, it, having an alternative GPS probably wouldn't help you a lot (given the state of the rest of European defense).

              • European defense forces are proper for the time being. What we lack is power projection capabilities.

                • Yes, but in the situations where Galileo would actually be useful, there are many cheaper things that would be much more useful.

Now you're being naive. Of course we could. That's why the US defense establishment has dropped its objections to Galileo, other than the objection that it is a waste of money.

I was of course speaking of legitimate means. Jamming and missiles don't count.
