  • I'm sure that the practicialities of force projection extend beyond sending some aircraft carrier somewhere. It's a bit of a trite response as it gives no indication of things such as effectiveness, capabilties, sustainability, and inter-action with amongst other things political, economic and logistical considerations.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

                • Kuci didn't think of it (American education system ), but all of us in Europe would be in trouble if the US Navy and its ability to safeguard maritime trade worldwide suddenly disappeared. Only we and the Rosbifs have the ability to project significant naval forces outside European waters and we certainly don't have enough ships to do so globally.

We could, of course, build a navy large enough to do so, but why bother if the Americans are doing a perfectly good job of it? Galileo is a similarly unnecessary investment, but as long as other European and international governments are willing to pay French firms to design and construct it, I'm all for the it.

                    • European military missions and priorities are hardly limited to the European continent.

I worked for the flag officers of 7 countires (6 of the European) on my last trip to the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Gulf of Aden, and the Red Sea. What I was doing there was enforcing myraid UN resolutions on all sorts of issues, most voted for my Europe. So why is it that one country (US) provides 90 percent of the vessels on station for the security of areas that are equally important to all nations involved? Hell, a German admiral gets to direct the operations of an American DDG that is more cabable than his country's entire fleet. That is just sad (though a dream come true for him).

But you wanted an example in Europe? How about security in the Medeterranian?

Who enforces most of the human trafficing/drug smuggling/enviromental/terrorism related laws in that body of water. Who kept an eye on Lybia all thos years? Hint, it isn't any of the countries with an actual adjacent coast line.

Such crap, break out a Jane's and get back to me on what you think the average European Navy can contribute, then bounce that off their country's GDP and population.

We are in an alliance, as a memeber of the alliance let alone the leader we have every right to ask questions about/object to things that affect that alliance like the duplication of efforts. You don't think we have that right? Tell the Italians and English to stop *****ing about the F-35B.

                            • I see no reason at all to assume Galileo comes at cost of other military spending. It's not set up as a defence project and the EU doesn't have a defence budget regardless.
