Sorry, no video links but I think I've got this one quickly. I will link my text sources.

Fiona Apple covered the Beatles "Across the Universe"

Beatles wrote "I'm Down" which was covered by YES (Jon Anderson - 1976).

I think that is 3 degress of separation....?

Fiona Apple > Beatles > Yes

Great job. Glad to see someone taking up the challenge!

Though there was a simpler path to be found, just two steps:
Jon Anderson was a member of the band Yes, and Yes covered "I'm Down" by the Beatles (couldn't find video for this)
And the beatles song "Across the Universe" was covered by Fiona Apple:

Not one of her best efforts, I'm afraid - kinda laconic version.

Took a while for me to realize that that "Darn" at the end was a band name. I assume you DID mean it as the next band to start with, and it wasn't just a generic expression of frustration?

If you did mean the band Darn, then I think you've managed to select a band even more difficult to conect to anything than Anal ****.

I did a brief bit of research on the band, and here's what I found:
      -No Wikipedia entry
-No mention in the Covers project
      -Nothing on Amazon
-Official site contains information on two albums, neither of which contain any cover songs or collaborations.
-A list of gigs that didn't seem to include opening for any band, or playing with any band, or playing a live cover of any song (though I didn't go through all the gigs... just got the idea that they've mostly played their own material at small clubs)

The only path that might plausibly lead from them to another artist seems to be the production team behind their albums, namely the guy who mastered one of their albums, Johan Funemyr... his name seems to pop up in connection with a couple of other artists, but frustratingly, at least on a brief look, they too seem to be small, isolated bands, playing exclusively their own material.

So considering that just a few posts ago I amended the rules a bit to avoid impossible cul-de-sacs, and DARN doesn't meet those requirements, perhaps if you'd be so kind as to suggest another artist or band.

(The rule ammendment, quoting myself: Oh, and perhaps a slight addition to the rules should be in order, to prevent TRULY impossible challenges - the band/artist in question should perform at least mostly in English, and should have an entry on Wikipedia. Just to ensure that anyone doesn't pick their garage band specialized on Inuit throat singing. )

I'll edit in that rule to the first post, something I should have done as soon as I thought of it.

Looks like a cross post Tiny - I do believe I found your easier way.

I see you got the same alternative solution I found - you posted it just as I was writing my reply to Molly Bloom

Great to see yet another participant!

Molly got there first though, so the next artist is up to her (or him?).

That said, if that "darn" at the end of her post was just a darn, as in "darn that was hard!", rather than the band darn, then my researches into this island of a band at an early stage of it's career has truly been a wild goose chaise.

Molly was in 7 not 6 (hence the "darn").

I'd like to propose a rule change if I may?

The person to complete the chain in 6 degrees gets to choose both ends of the following chain (but can't compete - to avoid obvious setups).

              Can we do this?

                AAH....

So my explorations into the obscure Swedish Garrage band "Darn" were truly misguided...

That being so, since Molly didn't get it down to 6 degrees of separation, I guess you are the winner of the round, and get to name the next artist.

                If you'd be so kind?

Hmm... maybe we can try that out.

I'll add the rule amendment to the first post, and we'll see how it goes.

So, if you'd be so kind as to name TWO artists/bands.

                      Will do.

Roy Hill (obscure 70's artist - sang "Join Me" - so we get the right one )

                      connects to The Sex Pistols.

Don't know how but should be interesting.....

                        Sounds like an interesting challenge.

I'll give it a go as soon as I find the time (unless someone beats me to it) - right now I've got some work to do.

In the meanwile, I added a few practical tips into the first post under the heading "Tips to spice things up, and to help participants". Feel free to have a look.

Do you mean George Roy Hill?
Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he studied music at Yale University under notable composer Paul Hindemith, graduating in 1943. He served in the United States Marine Corps as a cargo pilot during World War II and a night fighter pilot during the Korean War.

Hill got his start on television, directing such episodic series as Kraft Television Theatre. His first films were versions of such Broadway plays as Period of Adjustment in 1962 and Toys in the Attic in 1963.

George Roy Hill is most noted for directing such films as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting, which both starred the acting duo Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Other films are Slaughterhouse-Five, The World According to Garp, The World of Henry Orient, Hawaii, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Great Waldo Pepper, Slap Shot and The Little Drummer Girl.
If not, then he doesn't have a wiki page.
I never know their names, But i smile just the same
                          New faces...Strange places,
Most everything i see, Becomes a blur to me

No, wrong guy. The one I want did have a wiki page at one point.....

Give me a minute to provide a reference.

I found this on Roy Hill:

Not a wikipedia entry, but an article that does give a good starting point... it mentions some relevant links to more well known artists.

Couldn't find a wikipedia entry, but it seems that the spirit of the rule, if not the letter, is met by the information easily available on the net.

I think it's time for another slight rule tweak... check the first post in a few minutes time.

[edit:] also cleaned up the first post a bit - it was getting rather cluttered with revisions and additions.
