    • I hadn't noticed the change, but yeah, it's now "National take our daughters and sons to work day." I guess there must've been complaints about the horrible, sexist take your daughter to work day (because goodness knows taking your son to work was odd and certainly needed to be highlighted in some way ).

Actually, I'm all for the it being both.

        Just a question - what's the point?

        • I don't really have any opinion on the day, I just think it completely pointless, considering that I've visited my father's office repeatedly (whenever I want, in fact - it's a nice place to study), and so would my sister have, had I had one.

          • I think it is more to make it acceptable to take you kid to work, because alot of employers would probably prefer your disruptive offspring stay out of the office.

It's not pointless, or at least it wasn't when people came up with the idea.

Culturally, one typically didn't bring one's daughter to work, whereas one might very well bring a boy. A boy is gonna grow up to have a career, you see. Girls cook, clean and have babies Why would you bring them to work?

              Plus what Patroklos said.

                    • I have no problem with a spouse staying at home and being a homemaker as long as there is no societal pressure for people a particular gender to be the homemakers.

For Shanghai there is a reverse stereotype that the men are generally meek and do most of the housework, while the women make and control the money. Although, China, in general, has made far greater advances toward woman's independence and equality than India and China still has quite a way to go.

In that case, isn't every day career day?

The original point of Take Your Daughter to Work Day was for mothers to take their daughters to work so the daughters could see mommy in a job/career, and have her as a role model for their own career ambitions; it also allowed them to see mommy as something other than the person who does all the housework (fact: even in two-career couples where both parties make teh same income and work the same hours, women do the overwhelming amount of the cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc.) This point has long since been lost, perhaps because pop culture has caught up wih reality and provides sufficient images of working women.

                              • So you don't think a goal of feminism today is trying to change the culture and society so that sexist remarks and beliefs are seen as an abominable thing in almost all quarters?
                                No I don't.

Why did the sufferagettes fight so hard? They wanted women to acheive equal standing to men in a court of law and with the democratic institutions in society. They wanted women to be recognised as fully persons with the capability to stand up for themselves without the help of a man.

I believe feminism should encourage women to be strong, and to work if they wish to do so or be mothers if they wish to do so. Women should have the opportunity to pursue a career, but at the same time should not feel forced in choosing a career over a family in order to be considered equal.

A woman should not have to give up what makes her a woman in order to acheive equality in society, she should be encouraged to develop her femininity.

If feminism is reduced to being thought police in outlawing beliefs that are contrary to the established order, then they have lost their way. I know that feminism used to be a positive force, but they are no longer when the first thing that comes to mind is that feminists ought to outlaw speech to which they disagree.

If a man said he was going to start a male rights group and said that people should no longer be able to make fun of men because the comments are hurtful, he would be laughed at. Yet no one seems to question why we don't treat the so-called feminists the same way.
