Theres been a worldwide thermonuclear war. Youre trapped on a large island, with one other person. Youre a man. Shes a woman. Shes married. You dont know for sure if youre the last folks on earth, or if her husband, among others, are alive somewhere else. If you procreate with her, and her husband is alive, but no one else is, you save humanity, at the cost of committing adultery. If lots of other folks are alive, then you arent even saving humanity. If her husband is dead, then youre not committing adultery at all. What does Jewish law say to do? what does general ethics say to do? Are they in conflict? (Probably
      I don't see the conflict.
Jewish Law says that you shouldn't procreate.
What's on the other side i.e. what says that you should?
      Ethics? I don't see why.

Undergrad I majored in econ, but I took a lot of poli sci, phil, and a scattering of other stuff.

Afterwards I got an MBA, though in retrospect I think an advanced degree in Econ would have served me better.

I would think the preservation of the human species would be a positive good, but maybe Im showing my age, thats no longer so viewed.

The other day I was reading in the paper where more and more Christian churchs were having Passover Seder , some with help from local Jewish friends and others transforming it into their own thing. Some Jewish groups frowned upon this while some offered their help. Just wondered what your take might be on this.

I think its great to invite non-Jewish friends to experience a seder. If a church is holding a seder, though, it would seem to be a church event, which will end up having a church message. Im not sure its appropriate for Jews to be helping to organize a church service. Though Ive never been involved in such an event, and really couldnt speak to the details.

It wouldnt surprise me. I know 5 Jewish teenage girls, all of whom are fascinated by things Japanese, at least 3 of whom have taken Japanese in HS, and who IM each other in an odd blend of English, Hebrew, and Japanese. One of whom, (not POTM by the way) seemed intent on translating, Hebrew songs, I think, into Japanese. POTM is quite interested in the interfaces between Japanese and Jewish society. So far we've come with Chabad Tokyo, the Israeli embassy in Tokyo, and the Japanese embassy in Tel Aviv.

i would guess to mock both silly rightwingers who think France teh Gay, and silly euros who think all American conservatives are stupidly antifrench, and to mock the French, of course, and to take an ironic view on this whole Euro-US thingie.

                          I approve.

From an ethics point of view?
I just have never tought of it that way.
What kind of ethical basis would you use to defend the preservation of the human race?

I presume they wouldnt mention G-d, though.
Well, we read through a little book, which had a lot of biblical stuff in it (sometimes responsively, sometimes not). I gather that recently they have done more than they did in past years.

I think that the family considered it just culturally though (the grandparents are metaphysicists, the mother I am not sure, the daughter is an atheist).
