its interesting to note that in the absence of any news from the ME as a hook, those who want to troll about Israel can always find something.

Since when did pollsters do national popularity contests. I lived through the last couple of decades of the cold war, and I cant remember anything like that.

        then this

"He's right that only the creation of Israel made Jews really hated there"

        should have been

"He's right that only mass Jewish immigration to Palestine/Israel made Jews really hated there"

which is far from the same thing, at least IMO.

          Tunisia

          [edit] Mohammed Bey (1855-1881)
During the long reign of Aḥmad Bey the Jews enjoyed a period of great prosperity. His successor, Mohammed Bey, inaugurated his reign in 1855 by abolishing the drudgery formerly imposed upon the Jews; the caid Joseph Scemama, with whom the bey was on very intimate terms, probably used his influence in behalf of his coreligionists. In the same year, however, Mohammed Bey, being very religious, caused the execution of a Jew named Batto Sfoz on a charge of blasphemy. This execution aroused both Jews and Christians, and a deputation was sent to Napoleon III., asking him to interfere in their behalf. After two years of diplomatic negotiations a man-of-war was sent to enforce the demands of the French government. Mohammed Bey yielded, and issued a constitution, according to which all Tunisians, without distinction of creed, were to enjoy equal rights. The following articles of this constitution were of special interest to the Jews: (§ 4) "No manner of duress will be imposed upon our Jewish subjects forcing them to change their faith, and they will not be hindered in the free observance of their religious rites. Their synagogues will be respected, and protected from insult." (§ 6) "When a criminal court is to pronounce the penalty incurred by a Jew, Jewish assessors shall be attached to the said court." The constitution was abrogated in 1864 in consequence of a revolution, which entailed great suffering on several Jewish communities, especially on that of Sfax; but the constant fear of foreign interference rendered the government very circumspect in its treatment of the Jews.

There continued to be jew hatred, but it was constrained by colonialism, a situation that couldnt long remain. The Jews of Tunisia, among other places, had good reason to contemplate aliyah as a solution to their difficulties.

So they were unhappy with maass Jewish immigration to Palestine, then they launch a pogrom, which, guess what triggered the mass migration of Iraqi Jews to Palestine.

unless of course it wasnt strictly about Palestine, but was more about a hatred rooted in an immature nationalism, competition for places in trade and the professions, which led many Iraqis to WANT their jews to leave for Palestine. Now they couldnt say so explicitly, and perhaps didnt articulate it to themselves, but that makes their actions alot more rational.

You'll notice the survey was taken in November/December. That's 3 to 4 monthes after the war in Lebanon. IMO, this date marginally explains Israel's bad image (I'd say it explains why Israel is #1 instead of being #2 or #3, as I'd guess it normally would).

Iran is viewed more negatively in Brazil than in the US.

North Korea is viewed more negatively in Germany than in the US.

Russia is viewed more negatively in France than in Poland.

May I suggest that Im having a hard time taking the numbers seriously?

The numbers who view Israel as a "negative" influence in the US are so high they have to include people who are largley sympathetic to Israel, which leads me to believe it reflects a halo effect about the conflict in the region having a negative influence, as well as reaction to the Lebanon war, not the actual view of the country as a whole.

I have a question: why is no other religion clamoring for it's own country? Or, why do Jewish people feel the world owes them an entire country?

I've often wondered why they feel they get to have a religious based country but when other ME countries do it they get all up in arms?

I guess I just don't understand the Jewish point of view. I mean, Mormons, Scientologists, several other religions have been descriminated against. The Jewish religion happened to be the one Hitler was against... so that means they get their own country? I don't get it.

                              Cause the Jews are/were a people/nation/ethnic group/culture, and not just a religion.

I suggest any good one volume history of the Jews, for a fuller discussion of this.

I guess youre not familiar with Mormon views of Utah as Zion, are you? Or their failed resistance against the US? Or the fact that the US has always allowed mormons to migrate freely to Utah.
