Bombay has a pretty good climate so I believe.

(or has the PC gestapo decided I have to call it Mumbai now?)

Master-servant, employer-empolyee, it's almost the same thing - you pay a person for a service. The only difference is that there is a feudal connotation to that master-servant thing, which is not nice. Lot of people still feel an almost feudal obligation towards the people they employ, which is a good thing in many cases, because it makes them help these people out when needed, or do other things to empower them.

Yes, there is definitely nothing comparable to this in the United States.

Partially. It is also the large "middle class" in most western countries. very few people would have people that they would term as servants even though some people so have a houskeeper that does a few hours work a week

I must agree. Bombay during the summer is hot and sweaty and polluted. Bangalore, on the other hand, seems to be an air-conditioned city.

Of course, Indore is the logical choice if you believe in the law of averages - scorching heat in the summer (45+ C), nice and cold in winter (lowest it gets is 3 to 4 C).

Yeah, well, Toby's expensive. If you wanna fly over here from Finland and walk him for less $$, be my guest. I must warn you, though: he's kinda crazy.

The structure of the labor market leading to the high cost of unskilled labor.

For example, I pay my cleaning lady $170 per month to clean my place. She comes once every other week and spends probably 4 hours a time cleaning.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Which is one of the great things about being a geologist. It is extremely difficult to outsource this job due to 1) The work needs to be conducted here in the US. 2) Most of the work I do can legally only be done by a professional geologist licenced by the state of California. 3) Clients are spending millions of dollars so they tend to want to keep working with people they have personal relationships with. 4) Much of our work comes from the government and politically it would be unpopular if the government started outsourcing American jobs. 4) The one portion of the work which can be outsourced, writing, is the least value added part plus it typically requires a lot of knowledge about the site, the conditions, the geology, groundwater flow direction, etc... This would make it difficult for a foreigner who'd never been there and hadn't actually done the field research to write about the site in an knowledgable manner.

My job is pretty safe from the dangers of foreign off shoring.
