You see, we think of it as an employer-employee situation.
Master-servant, employer-empolyee, it's almost the same thing - you pay a person for a service. The only difference is that there is a feudal connotation to that master-servant thing, which is not nice. Lot of people still feel an almost feudal obligation towards the people they employ, which is a good thing in many cases, because it makes them help these people out when needed, or do other things to empower them.

But lots of students employ people. Sometimes, when three students are living in an apartment, they can afford to have two servants, one as a cook and another to do the dishes and laundry.
Yes, there is definitely nothing comparable to this in the United States.
Spiffor, we don't have domestic employees here at all. Exception will make the rule in this one.

Partially. It is also the large "middle class" in most western countries. very few people would have people that they would term as servants even though some people so have a houskeeper that does a few hours work a week

I must agree. Bombay during the summer is hot and sweaty and polluted. Bangalore, on the other hand, seems to be an air-conditioned city.
Of course, Indore is the logical choice if you believe in the law of averages - scorching heat in the summer (45+ C), nice and cold in winter (lowest it gets is 3 to 4 C).

Arrian, you pay 70 bucks a week for someone to walk your dog? Dude, I'll walk your dog for that money. I'll walk your neighbours dog as well!
Yeah, well, Toby's expensive. If you wanna fly over here from Finland and walk him for less $$, be my guest. I must warn you, though: he's kinda crazy.
Sure.. 60 bucks is my price. Plus, can walk with the dog, run, play and massage their leg muscles a bit if they get sore. Man, that's good money, I think that's good price even in the US. THat's.. 240 bucks extra a month, to walk a dog daily.

Why don't you just buy your own dog then and stop damaging the market?

Is that so? Is it the high cost of labour?
The structure of the labor market leading to the high cost of unskilled labor.
For example, I pay my cleaning lady $170 per month to clean my place. She comes once every other week and spends probably 4 hours a time cleaning.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

why everything is being outsourced to India. It is very hard to compete against that kind of cost structure.
Which is one of the great things about being a geologist. It is extremely difficult to outsource this job due to 1) The work needs to be conducted here in the US. 2) Most of the work I do can legally only be done by a professional geologist licenced by the state of California. 3) Clients are spending millions of dollars so they tend to want to keep working with people they have personal relationships with. 4) Much of our work comes from the government and politically it would be unpopular if the government started outsourcing American jobs. 4) The one portion of the work which can be outsourced, writing, is the least value added part plus it typically requires a lot of knowledge about the site, the conditions, the geology, groundwater flow direction, etc... This would make it difficult for a foreigner who'd never been there and hadn't actually done the field research to write about the site in an knowledgable manner.
My job is pretty safe from the dangers of foreign off shoring.

And I don't get paid enough, that is my answer. As I've probably said ad nauseum in the past, I would advise any of you to steer clear of the sciences if you want a proper career...
Nonsense. You just need to pick the right science field.
