While I agree they are very common, I know that courts here are very loathe to enforce something that could prevent an individual from working in their chosen field and would very strictly construe such documents against the employer.

While India would not be my first choice, there is an attraction to retiring to some cheaper place and living incredibly well.

Unfortunately I'm not the only person with that brilliant idea and the baby boomers might inflate the prices before I can get there

Actually, you can live like a king in India if you somehow find a way to earn in dollars and spend in Rupees. With the new SEZs (Special Economic Zones) coming up, you won't even have to deal with the infrastructure problems plaguing the country, because everything, from the roads to the water to the power, is privately run. Because private companies are far more efficient and competitive than the government at this point of time, you get everything cheaper AND better than in the rest of India in these SEZs.

I was just reading an article about how India is moving up the value chain, from being solely a service provider in the IT and back-office arena to being a home for software product companies, and how this is that pivotal moment when the transition is happening.

        • $233 would keep me going in rent for just over 5 days...hmmm...

And I don't get paid enough, that is my answer. As I've probably said ad nauseum in the past, I would advise any of you to steer clear of the sciences if you want a proper career...

It would take a LOT of baby boomers to inflate anything in a country of a billion people.

The average middle-class household in India employs two to four servants. A person living incredibly well employs anything from ten to twenty, to take care of his mansion and everything else. I employ one lady to do the laundry and the dishes (and yes, her salary is included in that 233 dollars). She works for about a hour a day at my place, and the rest of her working time is spent working at other households in the building or in the locality.

If you like decadence and luxury during your retirement, India is the place for you.

              • I like decadence and luxury. And my fast internet connection. One question. Why do you want someone else to do your laundry and dishes? Buy a dish washing machine, on the long run it'll be cheaper.

                • Servants?

2-4 servants would mean you're quite rich in the USA.

                    • To us, the concept of having servants does NOT jive with being "middle class." Middle class people where we come from don't have servants.

No, it won't. Such machines are very expensive.

Is that so? Is it the high cost of labour?

                          • You know you could go Saddam on Pakistan, and just steal everything you can and enslave the women. Then it would cost you nothing to have your clothes washes. Maybe get a nice little rub every now and then also.

                              .

The number of people overall is irrelevant. The important number is the number of people with the means and desire to compete for the comfortable properties I might want.

I wondered more about how many desirable properties there might be. Lets assume I want a house that is up to western standards of comfort and airconditioning with a quiet acre of land. While there might be many of these I would assume that some would be family properties that people would be loathe to sell .

Assume also that I would prefer to beon or near a beach. Does India still fit the bill ??
