Actually, that would be Japan. But China is closing fast.

I don't recall but are not some of the refineries in the US owned by Venezuela?? If so, perhaps the US should "nationalize" those. Compensation if any should be determined according to the same types of procedure that Chavez affords to his foreign investors

      • I don't believe they are, cuz the local papers would be screaming bloody murder about it if it were true. They hate Chavez here only slightly less than they hate Castro.

He is mostly stealing the property of Europeans at the moment though he is also grabbing the American assets which he can.

The workers have been chomping at the bit to take over the networks for years, and he's been holding them back. And he's said the foreign owners will be compensated.

I met a Venezuelan commie tonight and many other Latino supporters of the revolution. One person brought an Hugo Chavez action figure which plays the Venezuelan national anthem if you press a button on the back.
Please show Chavez has ever held anyone back instead of simply fanboying everything and grandstanding in order to make himself more popular. He has found the usual formula of scapegoating someone else then simply acting dictatorially in order to concentrate ever more power in his own hands. His country will be worse off because of it.

Did you read this thread at all? Seriously. If so you would know that the output of the national oil company has fallen greatly and that this is almost entirely due to the fact that trained scientists and technicitians are being chased off and replaced by talentless political yes-men whose sole qualification is they are sycophantically loyal to the strongman. That just isn't a sound way to run a company and it is resulting in decreased profits and decreased output as the most skilled people are leaving.

The reality is I don't care. The best people are leaving Ven. and going to work for the likes of ARCO or Exxon-Mobile. We're gaining highly qualified and experienced people while they are losing their best and brightest. Let Chavez **** on his nation's trained people. They'll end up in California or Florida anyway.

                    • An export embargo could be very hard on any country. You can sell all you want, but not being able to buy anything, or much if anything, close to home would have some major impacts.

Organising such an activity would be another matter entirely.

                      • Re: Oil. I posted a nice bit about Castro's Cuba only three years after the fall of civiliazation in that country. They hadn't planted the sugar fields in all that time and sugar production had fallen dramatically.

The article was also interesting about all those factories taken over by the commies. Apparently, a lot of the equipment was shipped to Russia for the "benefit" of the people of Cuba.

Then there's Coke. Commie Coke from the nationalized Coke plant was really rat and bug infested, so much so, that people refused to drink it.

                        Ah, the glories of socialism.

Actually a LOT of them end up working in Alberta . The oilsands in Canada shares a lot of attributes with the heavy oil projects of venezuela so this is one place where the expertise is most useful.

                            • God, Chavez's moves seem a lot like that commie who took over in Iran in '52. He got dictatorial powers, dismissed parliament and then used his power to abandon. He was tossed out by the people (mullahs) shortly thereafter.

Chavez also sounds a lot like Hitler in '33. Got emergency powers and the rest is history.

Last month was the first time in history when foreigners actually owned more US government bonds then American citizens did.

BTW, Chavez officially got the power to rule by decree today. No need for legislatures or courts. Chavez's words are now law. Yep, Venezuela is an ideal democracy.
