  • Cook and Cook Suburbs are only about half reported. Are the parts of Cook that are in her district heavily Republican.

    • So far, according to CNN, the Dems are slightly ahead in Missouri, Virginia, and Montana Senate races.

      • Well, her whole area is fairly republican; this is the Henry Hyde district, remember. Most of Chicago has reported, most of what is left in Cook is suburban.

          • Incidentally, Marshall is down by a couple thousand votes in GA-08, with 94% reporting (although most of the remaining votes are in Marshall's counties). Will this be the only victory the GOP can claim tonight?

              • I'm happy for the democrats, but some of them seem to be declaring victory somewhat prematurely

                • Marshall's back up. This could be a total shut out. Unless something changes, not a single Dem incumbent in Congress or in a Governor's mansion would be unseated. That would probably be totally unprecedented.

                  • Webb is up by 11k in Virginia now. By my calculations, he is 4 votes below the .5% barrier

                    • McCaskill has won. Tester will win. and in a couple of days, Webb will emerge triumphant. Tonight's a good night to be a Democrat.

Also, a shout out to Winston.

                      • Hi Winston

I'm still a little anxious about Tester though - his lead, up until just a bit of time ago, was gradually shrinking, and 35% still are not reporting.

                        • Looks like Dems take both houses and protect all their incumbants, I'd say this is just short of a total blowout for the Democrates and efectivly starts a new political era. If the democrates can pass some meaningfull legislation in the next two years and can force a pull out or the begining of one in Iraq they will have some amunition to incresse their lead even more in 2008 and possibly take the presidency.

I wouldn't go quite this far. This is, unfortunately, proof that the current toxic political dynamic is still in play:

Step 1: Elect Republicans because they have clear ideas and can implement them.
Step 2: Discover that those ideas are, in fact, evil.
Step 3: Elect Democrats because they're not Republicans.
Step 4: Discover that the Democrats don't actually have any ideas, and couldn't implement them if they had.
                            Step 5: GOTO Step 1

If the democrates can pass some meaningfull legislation in the next two years and can force a pull out or the begining of one in Iraq they will have some amunition to incresse their lead even more in 2008 and possibly take the presidency.
A big "if"; I suspect W is going to get a quick lesson from Uncle Richard this week on how the "veto" thing works. But, if nothing else, the Dems will be in a great position to consolidate their hold on the Senate in 2008, when many more GOP seats will be vulnerable.

                            • So far, Ive been tracking Testers lead in Montana at random intervals:

                              10591 11251 8905 8274 8219 7428 6845 6895 7025

Yellowstone County, where Billings (the largest city of Montana is in, and a beautiful area btw), however, seems to have not changed in a while, at least, not since I began tracking.

                              • My understanding is that in year 6 of a presidency, there is always a swing to the opponent, that being the case, this is not a bad result for the republicans in reality, and certainly not a seachange in US politics, just a routine result.
