Sony's PlayStation 3 game console, which went on sale in Japan over the weekend leading off a global launch, can't play some of the older games for the original PlayStation and the upgrade PlayStation 2, a company official said Tuesday.

Sony Corp. had billed PlayStation 3 as compatible with the previous PlayStation machines.

But Sony Computer Entertainment's spokesman, Satoshi Fukuoka, said some of the 8,000 older games weren't working properly on PS3, making the wrong sounds or images, and some couldn't be played at all.

He declined to give a number for the games that weren't functioning, but said the same problem is expected when the game console goes on sale in the U.S. on Friday. About 16,000 different games have been sold for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 in North America.

Fukuoka said the problems in playing the older games were not a glitch and had been expected. Sony announced the problem on its Japanese web page on Saturday, when the PS3 went on sale to lines of eager fans at Japanese retailers.

Users can punch in the name of the PS or PS2 game on the Web page, and a list will pop up, telling you if the game can be played without problems or not.

For example, all the Biohazard series games can be played without problem, except for one in which a virtual gun won't fire properly, according to Sony's web page.

"We are sorry for the game fans that they cannot play all the games," Fukuoka said. "But unfortunately some of these problems could not be avoided."

PlayStation 3 is facing off in a three-way console war for this Christmas against Nintendo Co.'s Wii, which goes on sale Sunday in the U.S., and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, which had a year's head start over rivals.

Although response has been enthusiastic to the PS3, the launch hasn't been smooth.

Production problems meant that only 100,000 PlayStation 3 machines were in time for its debut in Japan. When it goes on sale in the United States on Friday, some 400,000 PS3 consoles will be available there.

The console's European launch has been pushed back until March. That was the second delay, as PS3 had been initially promised for spring of this year.

Sony has a lot riding on the success of the PS3, which is powered by the new Cell computer chip and supported by the next-generation Blu-ray video disc format.

But Sony will be losing money for some time because of the high costs for research and production that went into the highly sophisticated machine.

The red ink is coming at a time when the Japanese electronics and entertainment company, known for the Walkman portable audio player and Spider-Man movies, is struggling to stage a comeback.

In recent years, Sony has fallen behind in key products like flat-panel TVs and digital music players.

A fumble in its PS3 business could prove a huge blow at a time when it's seeing its brand image badly tarnished by a massive global recall of lithium-ion batteries for laptops.

    Damn those far-right sites!

You know, I already admitted that news to be valid.

1,25% of games have minor problems...

Will you now find a third source for the same news or actually try to come up with something new?

I'm just pointing out your ridiculous positions, is all.

By the way, I saw more RR7 screenshots...many of them actually look a lot better on the 360 than PS3. Water and lighting effects in particular look decidedly last-gen on the PS3, despite the year extra development time.

Call of Duty 3 looks comparable on the two platforms, except its framerate gets choppy on the PS3 and it's silky smooth on the 360.

HD MPEG2 on a 25GB disc has a sub-optimal bitrate. Details are lost in the non-aggressive codec.

Quality of bluray video skyrocketed with the switch to VC-1 -- was that just a coincidence?

There are all kinds of technical reasons why VC-1 is superior in terms of size and detail that we can go into.

                better engineering,

By the way, would you consider Sony batteries to be an example of better engineering as well?

                  Oh really?

What, are you saying that Xbox360 is a better console? Silky smooth framerates and far more spectacular water&lightning effects...

heh, you sure are full of surprises!

who would have thought youd say something like that!?

So you make a bunch of inaccurate statements, they get debunked, and you resort to more conspiracy theories...

Did it ever occur to you that the reason I consider the 360 a better console is because its design makes far more sense from a game console perspective? Especially it's engineering...

There's no blatant bottlenecks in the Xbox 360, while there are numerous on the PS3. That gives developers nightmares and explains why even with additional development times, games aren't looking as good.

No, let's not go into the details. I readily concede that VC-1 packs more punch per bit. It's a superior codec.

I am just pointing out that how you deal with image information such as film grain will have a larger impact on disc quality than the choice of codec.

Of course! Sony batteries are exceptionaly good. Some of them just happen to blow up. So? When you manufacture a billion units, one or two always gets send back to the factory for failing. Error margins and stuff. Standard procedure.

I think we both agree that MS should stick to trying to patch up the security holes in Windows and leave the hardware business to the professionals.

I have never seen anything sub par from Sony.

So when is the price cut for the 360 and HD-DVD drive?

                          I'm becoming impatient.

                              Err. No, it's really not.

There were design flaws with the batteries. That is why they've been recalled across MANY different products -- fundamental design flaws.

I think we both agree that MS should stick to trying to patch up the security holes in Windows and leave the hardware business to the professionals.

I have never seen anything sub par from Sony.
Why would I agree to that? If you've never seen anything sub par from Sony you've never looked hard enough.

Remember the "feature" of the PSP where the X button would get stuck?
Or how about the original PSX which overheated repeatedly and consistently?
Or how about their millions of batteries that explode?

Sony's been swimming in mediocrity the past 10 years. They still charge a fortune for it, though.

And before you play the "security" card -- Sony's the one that covertly installed spyware on people's PCs, not MS...

I anticipate the PS3 price will be cut soon, in conformity to the Japanese prices. I wonder whether Sony will even be able to sell out its Christmas allotment in the US.

In anticipation of this, M$ should keep the momentum up by cutting the 360 price.
