I do agree being a little upset to find out my Sony Walkman NW-E507 was made in China. It seems to me like the Chinese are to blame for Sonys problems. Sony is just trying to survive on the market flooded with Chinese copies like Coby, Sonny etc.
It wasn't a manufacturing defect from China that screwed up the batteries -- it was a design defect from Japan. It has nothing to do with how many they produced and everything to do with their lack of attention to detail.

    • I am under the understanding that the source of the defects is not wholly known atm. Please dont draw your own conclusions based on your presumptions. Im sure its the sloppy Chinese who are to blame. The Japanese excecs can only be blamed for shifting the production into China in the first place. But that decision was taken under good auspices and trying to provide us with more inexpensive Sony products.

The Betamax was a very advanced system with better technology. They were "victorious" in a tiny niche market, but as a technology, it was not successful, as it didn't dominate the video world.

The SACD, while "victorious" in its tiny niche market, is not a success, because it hasn't achieved mass market traction, which was its ostensible intent.

When your net income is high enough quality tends to take over price in importance. We dont want to be cheap do we. Why should we buy ****, and settle to anything less then the best. Thats what you as a consumer have to take side in.
Yes, which is why Ikea is doing so poorly in sales in first-world countries...

I'm not saying that pure crap products will always win. I'm saying that a product just has to be "good enough". That's why camera phones are succeeding. It's why Target in the US is succeeding so fantastically as a retailer, as they don't sell pure crap like Wal-Mart, but instead things that are just "good enough".

Really? You're entitled to your opinion, but it's very different from actual market realities. That's why I'm saying you drink the Kool-aid.

          1. Coby is not a Chinese company.
          2. The Chinese are not to blame if the manufacturing flaw arises from the machine tools that create the batteries or a problematic design. Furthermore, if the source plant isn't in China, then Sony's battery ails have nothing to do with China at all.

laurentius, whether you like it or not, you are sounding like a Sony fanboi, particularly because you seem to insist that the Sony marque apparently has some sort of inbred quality when that's not necessarily the case.

You've bought into the brand, now you're scrambling to justify your loyalty in the face of mounting evidence that the Sony of today is not the engineering marvel that was Sony of thirty, twenty, or even ten years ago.

            • More Sony quality: the controllers have problems staying synced, forcing you to reconnect it via cable to resync.
