Actually its very easy to tell those apart. CDs are mixed from 4 sound channels to 2.0 stereo sound where SACDs are mixed from 6-8 channels to 5.1 surround sound.
SACDs sound pretty amazing

SACD is as much of a success as DVD Audio. Which is to say, "Sure, if you consider the the undefined percentage increase of 0 to 1 to be a rip-roaring success..."
Or, in other words, SACD is about as successful as Betamax, which had a long life in a very niche market, but failed in the greater market.
Or, in other words, SACD is about as successful as the MiniDisc, which is moderately popular in Japan, but nowhere else in the world.
Or, in other words, SACD is about as successful as the MemoryStick, which is kinda big for Sony products, but nobody else uses it.
