Without PS3, the future of Blu-Ray was indeed looking dire. Videophiles were reporting sub-par video quality compared to HD-DVD and there is a dearth of Blu-Ray players compared to HD-DVD. Toshiba's promiscuousness is working to its advantage.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Got my HD-DVD today...as suspected, it's really, really quiet when playing -- just like the 360 is when playing DVDs.

Have I mentioned it's really pretty?

The menus are much faster than DVDs too.

I'm getting really excited about PS3. Xbox360 is starting to look more and more inferior to it. The blu-ray movies look absolutely stunning from 50 inch 1080p flat tv.

          I don't understand this.

Bluray and HD-DVD quality is more or less a wash, perhaps leaning a bit in favour of HD-DVD.

And there's not a game on the PS3 that can come close to touching Gears of War.

I'm not sure why the 360 is looking inferior?

            For a lot of reasons. Xbox360+HD-DVD price = PS3

PS3 = more powerful, better engineering, better backwards compatibility even the case is more beautiful.

Xbox360 = More noisy, more power hungry, no 1080p, no blu-ray, clumsy MS made user interface, crappy games made for retarded US market(Halo etc.).

And a year from now the games will be fully unleashing the power of the PS3.

Btw Asher have you ever seen a blu-ray movie from a large true HD TV?

              They look very very impressive.

                Don't bite the marketing.

better backwards compatibility even the case is more beautiful.
By more beautiful do you mean fugly, huge, and extremely prone to fingerprints and scratchy?

Xbox360 = More noisy, more power hungry
I'll grant you it's noisier, but it actually uses quite a bit less power.

                no 1080p
Huh. Here I am with my 42" 1080p LCD TV, watching HD-DVDs in glorious 1080p and playing Splinter Cell: Double Agent in 1080p.

                no blu-ray
A ridiculous point, seeing as bluray is getting worse reviews than HD-DVD and far less commercially successful so far.

                clumsy MS made user interface
The interface is being well received compared to the PS3's interface. I'm already hearing people *****ing about its small font size and complicated menu hierarchy, and lots of wasted screen realestate.

crappy games made for retarded US market(Halo etc.).
I suppose you prefer glorious games like Genji to craptastic games such as Gears of War?

And a year from now the games will be fully unleashing the power of the PS3.
A year from now the pathetic memory bandwidth to the hack-job GPU will still be a huge bottleneck as it is today.

                  Yes.

I'm also well aware that most Bluray movies use crap MPEG2 encoding and look worse than their HD-DVD counterpart.

I'm also an owner of a 1080p "true HD" (that's marketing BS, by the way) big screen TV and I enjoy my HD-DVD movies on it.

You sound like an annoying Sony marketbot with your blatant lies (no 1080p! TRUE HD! XBOX ISNT TRUE HD!!!) and general ignorance...

                    IMO the PS3 is fugly.

                    no 1080p

                    false

                    no blu-ray

                    don't want it

                    clumsy MS made user interface

Sony has better experience at UI design than MS?

We happen to be in the US market and like those games

Bits on a ****ing disc. An HD movie is the same on HD-DVD or Blu-ray or my harddrive or 10,000 floppies.

This will be true once Sony stops using the archaic MPEG2 and moves to modern codecs.

Bluray was at an early disadvantage in picture quality because they used MPEG2 over VC-1.
