About the Honda Civics, those new ones seems to be selling pretty well in the US, so maybe Honda got it right. I personally love the look of them. They're roomy inside, too. Also, people modify Civics because parts are available for them all over the place. You used to actually be able to take engine parts from the Integras and Preludes and put them in a Civic. Plus they used to have very good underpinnings/suspension systems, which were rare for that class of car. Honda manual transmissions had better feel than some BMWs. I don't really know much about the new ones though. I just can't stand the look of the Corollas. It's like a boyracer car took a suppository.

edit: I could be more helpful if I knew more English/European small cars. The Civic is a good get, but there may be something else out there.

Cars these days have more horsepower, better gas millage, and drive better than ever. That's my pep talk for the car hunt! Good luck.

Well my car is a confirmed write-off now so I just have to get looking at cars and hope the money doesn't take too long to get through...actually they can take as long as they like as I have a hirecar to cover the duration

Eughhh, car hunting is so frustrating, especially finding something you want at the right price. Test drove a car today - finally found something that matched my pretty picky needs, was actually not sold when I got there and thus took it on a test drive and moved like a brick...something was knackered with the turbo Passed on that one straight away...

If only these things were easier...

I love my Mazda Miata -- sport and inexpensive.

But I also looked real hard at the Mitsubitshi Elipse Spyder Bigger car, costs about the same.

Don't confuse it with the Toyota Spyder -- zero truck space...ooops, you're in London...English translation: It doesn't have a boot.

I have never heard of any of those models...

PH - don't forget to check how much tread is left on the tyres. I got two years out of the tyres on my car but have just had to replace all 4 at a cost of 440 euros. Ouch!

So haggle if the tyres are worn!

Yeah, I have checked that on the cars I have looked at. Relax. And I also give garages absolute hell...I'm not an easy sale and certainly don't want to be. Only last night I visited a garage about a car at a price slightly above what I was willing to pay for it. They were quite big and arrogant. They not only refused to budge on the price, they wouldn't give me a warranty without paying a hefty sum (which they wouldn't even quote unless I agreed a sale ) and it was overdue for a service (they hadn't done one) and had no spare key which would also need replacing (also not cheap). Huge points at which I would knock them down, plus some jumped up £71 admin charge! I just walked out and left him my address and phone number and told him to contact me if he wishes to make a sensible deal

Even if they give a call, I'm not sure I would make a deal with them.

Some of those used car companies are pretty weird. I was looking for a car this summer and at one of the places the key couldn't be turned and another wich I had for a testdrive couldn't go below 2500 rpm in idle after I had beaten the engine a bit.

I never expected to even get a reply. It was a big car supermarket and they seemed pretty arrogant.

Well I have a new car, I just need to pick it up - they never received the discs for the sat nav so they are just trying to locate those, but I'd rather wait and have those later, this commuting business is driving me mad...long delays, leaves on lines, points failures...and I've only being doing this for 4 days
