  • The Flames will showcase some new lines tonight. Tanguay's been bumped down to the second line, where he actually looked best. He seems to gel better with Kobasew and Lombardi.

    Forwards:
    Huselius Langkow Iginla
    Tanguay Lombardi Kobasew
    Friesen Nilson Amonte
    Ritchie Lundmark McCarty

    Defence:
    Regehr Phaneuf
    Hamrlik Zyuzin
    Ference Warrener

    Goal:
    Kiprusoff.

True Phaneuf has been the best d-man for the Flames on more nights than pretty much any of the rest . . . But the true test of a TEAM is the ability to rise above the loss of one of your stars and still find a way to compete (if not win). From what I saw and read, Calgary wasn't even remotely competitive in the Nashville game and the score was VERY flattering

I'll be most interested to see how Huselius does on the big line. He is the player on the Flames that frustrates me the most. Pretty much every game he does something creative offensively . .. some of it looks downright awesome, but in the end result, he doesn't seem to manage to finish and his point totals so far are way low.

Probably-- Buffalo should win the division and I just can't see Montreal being good enough to be the best non-division winner-- If I had to pick, I'd choose Ottawa for that 4th seed based on the early going.

But beyond that wow-- there's a LOT of average teams in the east Every team but 4 ( Phil, Tampa, Flor and Bos)are earning at least an average of 1 point per game (and 2 of those are close. There are also two really impressive teams in the East so far ( anyone want to predict the Atlantic??)

The WEst is far different as there are more teams excelling. Anaheim, Minnesota , Dallas and SanJose all can claim excellent starts ( and does anyone not see those 4 taking playoff berths?) with Edmonton and Vancouver also quite pleased with themselves.

Liek the east, only a couple of teams are totally sucking thus far and perhaps one surprise has been the reasonable starts of Chicago and St Louis.

Why? They haven't impressed me much at all. At this moment I'd say Montreal's played better than them.

Ovechkin wants a piece of Iginla

CALGARY — Alexander Ovechkin will be looking for Jarome Iginla Monday night when the Washington Capitals challenge the Calgary Flames. And if he has to, Ovechkin said he's willing to settle things on the ice.

Are we talking about a fight? A goal-scoring contest?

No, we're talking about getting an autographed hockey stick from the Flames' captain.

"I want to ask him for his stick," Ovechkin said at Monday's morning skate at the Pengrowth Saddledome. "I have other sticks — (Mario) Lemieux, (Pavel) Datsyuk, (Zdeno) Chara."

Asked when he was planning to ask Iginla for an autographed hockey stick, Ovechkin replied: "When I have a chance. Even during the game? Yeah, maybe during a face-off."

This is why so people around the National Hockey League like the second-year Russian, who last season scored more than 50 goals and won the Calder Trophy as top rookie.

Ovechkin says what he feels and is seldom without a smile on his face. Even here, on the third stop of his Western Canada tour, Ovechkin is happy to meet with fans, sign autographs, pose for photographs and spend all kinds of time with the media.

And this being his first visit to Calgary, he said he also wanted to take care of a little business by adding to his collection of hockey memorabilia.

"I like him," Ovechkin said of Iginla. "He's the leader of the Calgary team. He's one of the best forwards in the league. He plays all the time hard."

Ovechkin explained that he and Iginla share the same agent, Don Meehan, and that the two players spoke on the phone when Ovechkin was drafted by the Capitals.

"My English was not as good as now. I asked him, 'How is it going?' He wished me good luck," said Ovechkin.

So far this season, Ovechkin has six goals in 10 games while Iginla has five in nine games. With the emergence of teammate Alexander Semin, who has scored eight times already, the Capitals have more depth than they've shown in recent years and that could make Ovechkin even deadlier.

Just a feeling that Ottawa has overall more talent. Plus Ottawa has really dominated some teams. Perhaps my feelings are colored by recent games in that I watched Ottawa completely dismantle Toronto and then watched the Habs sad effort against TO Saturday Night. Its hard for me to predict them as world-beaters when their most recent effort was so weak

                    • Asher did you see the piece where Ovechkin was golfing. he was terrible -- an obvious beginner swinging and missing etc etc on early holes-- Then on a late hole he got a hole-in-one-- He was like an overjoyed kid with too much candy

I had seen that on wiki once and I seem to recall someone saying that one of his names was Elvis . . . but if you had asked me his full name without recourse to assistence, I would not have recalled any of the rest of it

                              Lets see

Toronto -- looked awful against Ottawa TWICE and salvaged a shootout win against Montreal in a game where Montreal was incredibly flat for much of the game but came back. 47 GA puts Toronto about 14th in the Eastern Conference on GAA and I don't think that level of defensive performance gets you a playoff spot regardless of how good your offence is. Should be a wild ride!!
Yup, definitely will be a wild ride.

Toronto is missing three d-men, including Kubina. When Kubina gets back, the Leafs will be stronger.

When Kubina was in the line up, the Leafs d was able to shut down the Sens.

The problem now is that McCabe and Kaberle have to put a lot of time on ice, too much time.

And even with the awful games against the Sens, the Leafs are still 6-4-3, good enough for fourth in the east. Given the pre-season predictions and the injuries, this is a great start. Yes, still room for improvement, but also existing signs they are a much better team than last year.
                              Golfing since 67

Only if you ignore the fact that they've played 3 more games than montreal and 4 more than pittsburgh.
