No. It was never a fairy tale.

That isn't an argument, it's contradiction. An argument is a series of logical steps intended to establish a proposition. Contradiction is just the automatic nay-saying of whatever the other person says. [/Python]

The concept of sides is a bourgeois anachronism. In a postmodern flamewar, it's every spammer for himself!
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

              • Regarding the OP, Whaleboy's parents sound pretty cool and it's probably not worth antagonising them.

Preaching atheism is fairly tasteless and counterproductive. I don't think it's a good idea.

How? It seems to be going through all the usual stages. Soon it will reach the end of its lifecycle, and be snowed under by three consecutive pages of BK quoting Thomas Aquinas, followed by scattered, futile attempts by GePap et al to stem the continuous tide of centuries-old philosophy and theology. Or were you being sarcastic?

PH: By "us" I referred to religious folk in general. I'm sorry it wasn't specific enough to infer that. As to arguments, I believe the purpose of debate is to enlighten one or both participants by exposing them to alternate points of view. Scoring points off of strangers to win applause from other strangers over the internet is a dubious accomplishment.

I commented on the personal-life bit only after it was brought up by others, since I wasn't sure how exactly to argue with the condescending invective you call an argument ("You are EDUCATED STUPID because you do not know the INEFFABLE WISDOM of nature's harmonic time cube! I am above God!"). Meeting contempt with contempt seemed as likely a strategy as any to succeed in breaking the stalemate.

Seeing as they expect intellectual honesty, though, perhaps he could simply ask them whether or not they'd like to read a book which, in his view, provides a final, clinching proof for the non-existance of God.

That's a succinct summary of what a number of people have been arguing. I hadn't realised that proselytism could afflict atheists too, until recently.

                      • Did you actually read the thread or just the title? If you don't come back with the right sequence of events within the next hour, I automatically dub thee a dumbf**k
I gave your thread the respect it deserved. I skimmed it.

Ah, I see, the person you sent the email to was a work friend of your mothers, instead of a work friend of yours. Um, ok. Totally changes everything!

I have, however, missed your deadline and am thus dubbed dumbf**k. Huzzah!

Well what was it then? You're very good at being contrary but not very good at expanding on whatever it is you are trying to say

Unfortuntely, the nature of my beliefs precludes me from being on anybody's side. That is to say, if I were to express my true opinions on this message board, everyone would agree that I am an evil Nazi who needs to be exterminated. Oh, and they would also disagree with me.

                              • Who, me? Nah. I've been thinking about writing up a nice long essay on my philosophical beliefs and showing it to 'Poly for awhile, but it's something I'd have to plan out very well first.

Also, I wouldn't want to threadjack this delightful thread to do it. But really, even creating a new thread about it seems rather narcissistic and egotistical. ****, this post seems rather narcissistic and egotistical. We'll see.
