    • Hastert has said he will not run for minority speaker. Not that he ever stood a chance after how bad his leadership turned out.

          • Allen just conceded. However, I got the sense that he is expecting to run for another office, either Warner's Senate seat, or Governor in '09.

                Good luck against Warner.

That's the most depressing post in the history of Apolyton.

                    • Why would those prospects depress you Zkrib? We haven't had anyone truly "presidential" since FDR. What the hell else is new?

(Ok ok, maybe Ike and Kennedy had their good days here and there.)
                      Unbelievable!

                      • FDR and JFK are both brilliant examples of Presidents whose entire "strong leader" stature was crafted by a co-operative media. Both had their health problems, Kennedy was too impulsive and immature for a leadership position.

HW Bush seems like a very dignified and calm leader in retrospect. Reserved, thoughtful, giving credit where it's due, doing his best.

                        • Something interesting Chafee said:

"Two days after losing a bid for a second term in an election seen as a referendum on President Bush and the Republican Party, Sen. Lincoln Chafee said he was unsure whether he'd remain a Republican," the AP reports.

When asked whether he felt that his loss may have helped the country by switching control of power in Congress, he replied: "To be honest, yes."

                          Wow...

After W, Caligula only seems a bit too eccentric to govern effectively.

Oh, and according to Wikipedia Obama has the support of Oprah Winfrey. So he's pretty much got that housewife demographic locked down.

                            • ...and according to pollingreport.com ~45% of registered haven't even heard of him, and he is named by about 15% of his own party for '08. He'd have to produce and push through a damn spectacular 1 1/2 years of legislation to even get a chip in for nomination. I just can't begin to fathom the hard-on for this guy around here.

                              • It has something to do with his being the only known Democrat to possess any form of charisma. Better to be a novice with personality like Obama than a soulless leather veteran like Kerry, IMO. I had no idea who Kerry was before he got nominated, BTW.
