To prevent working people from voting, of course. California keeps polls open until 7:30 though it used to keep them open until 8pm. Budget cuts were the supposed reason for limiting the time citizens had to vote. There should be a federal law preventing the closing of polls at 6pm since most 8-5 works won't be able to leave work, drive home, find a parking space near the polling station, stand in line, and vote in just 1 hour.

Since 8-5 is the standard working hours and the election is ALWAYS held on a working day it makes sense to give people time to vote which is not in the standard working hours. This problem is even worse since Republicans routinely slash the number of polling stations in Democratic districts in states they control; that means democratic voters face extremely long lines if they want to vote. The closing of the polls at 6pm is designed to prevent people who are waiting in those lines from voting.

I hope you are right, however, it seems unlikely that Democrats will not be able to stop these horrible abuses since the Senate and the Executive branch remain in the hands of the party which wants to prevent nonwhites from voting.

I just don't see how laws can be passed to prevent these abuses since Republicans want the abuses to continue and they control 2.5 of the 3 branches of government.
