Holy sh*t. O'Reilly of FOX News tonight, on three seperate occasions in two different segments, labelled Congressman Foley... (D-FL). Mark Foley was in the past a registered Democrat... but he switched parties in the 1980's. This was no "honest mistake" as some have claimed elsewhere or might try to claim here. This was a deliberate smear against Democrats. Utterly despicable.

by strange coninceidence. I happened to be watching O'reilly tonight. Though I was distracted by all the alcohol I was consuming tonight, and had to read the closed captioning to determine what he was saying.

The viewer mail was decent. It mentioned some democrat in the 1080's who had a similar claim against him. In that case, it was alleged the democrats backed him. While in this case, the republicans aren't backing Foly, but distancing themselves from him. I don't know if this is true or not (I can't remember the 80's that well )

That's not exactly true. In the 80s, two underage-sex scandals broke around the same time, one involving Phil Crane (R-IL) and a 17-year-old girl, the other involving Gerry Studds (D-MA) and a 17-year-old boy. When they broke, teh House immediately convened special committees, investigated, and censured both ot them. Crane resigned -- probably because he was an uber-conservative values type who knew he couldn't weather re-election. studds, whose district encompassed provincetown (IIRC), decided his constituents would forgive him, ran again, and won.

There's a nice recap of this in an op-ed piece in today's Washington Post.

But teh point is, the Dems DIDN'T circle the wagons around Studds. Far from it.

I didn't say that didn't matter. Monica was an adult, old enough to make her own decisions. LEGALLY old enough to make them about sex with another adult. A teenager is not. Apples and oranges.
