    • I saw the last 5-7 minutes of the press conference. TO looked alert and together. (The incident was yesterday evening.)

TO's "publicist" BTW is a disgrace to the profession - poor media presence, repeatedly used bad English, and generally unfocused. I'm thinking she's from the Homeboys School of Publicity. She tried to paint a picture of TO as a man with such a clean body that it overreacted to normal doses of pain meds, plus that he's taking many supplements ("to try and get on the field") so it's likely these supplements had this negative interaction.

After she was done embarrassing herself, TO was sent back on stage to "thank the Dallas Police and FMD" for their help, plus everyone who had called to check on him and wish him well. Blah blah blah.

Me, I just want to know if they pumped his stomach.

Wish I had seen the beginning, but it appears that the game plan is to deny suicide, claim bad reaction to medication, and being so drowsy as to not be able to recall exactly what happened, how many pills, etc.

Thanks for posting the police report, Sloww. Most excellent!

                  • In what way, exactly, are the Cowboys a good defense? When are we going to get bored of the hype surrounding a team that has essentially been league-average or worse for a few years running now?

At this level, it isn't about protecting a QB from a good defense. It's more about whether or not a QB knows the system and is ready for the speed of the game. Can he handle it? That's the real question.

The notion that Young is going to "get killed" if he plays against a Dallas but not a Houston is just stupid. These are NFL players, not college players. Regardless of whether or not they are top defenses or bad defenses, they are still NFL defenses and Young has not been exposed to them yet. It's not going to make much difference what team he gets exposed to if you are talking about him "getting killed". I don't really know what you mean by that or how it pertains to his development or his career.

A QB needs playing time and experience to develop... period. Getting him in sooner rather than later will only help him, not hurt him... if he is prepared.

That is the only criteria that needs to be met and what the coaching staff needs to be worried about... not whether or not they are playing a good defense.

I know you like to sit down and look at stats and think that a defense ranked 30th in the league can't be as tough on a QB as a defense ranked in the top 10. But it doesn't make that much difference. Stats are so deceptive in the NFL. Parity is king. Everyone is at a high level. Success depends more on execution, momentum, and overall team balance. Defensive players can be extremely talented, fast, and physical... and still potentially "kill" a guy, even on a defense ranked 30th in the league.

But then again, someone who watches football and knows something about the game would know this. Not just some tool who looks at stats and thinks he's an expert.

Dallas has and has had one of the top defenses.
Rotating linemen that stay fresh. Good LB's and Terence Newman and Roy Smith in the secondary.

Well, last season, the Boys were an above average defense, at 13th in the league in yards allowed. That was the first year they switched over to a 3-4, which is Parcells' perfered defensive front. They have another year to get used to it. DeMarcus Ware has a year of experience behind him. I think the Cowboys get into the Top 10 this year.

What I meant by Young getting killed is that the Cowboys have 7 sacks in 2 games, which is in the Top 10 of sacks/game in the league. And that's just sacks. The Cowboys put good pressure on the QB. Against the Cowboys, Young will get hit fairly often.

                          • We hear that the Cowboys have a good defense a hell of a lot, and we hear even more about the offense, but they don't win that many games in the end. Why? Because they just aren't as good as people tend to say they are. Why do people tend to say they're good? Because they have one of the largest fan-bases in the country.

Dallas was 24th in yards allowed per rush last year. To put it in perspective, they were worse than San Francisco, Kansas City, Oakland, and Green Bay. The passing defense was respectable at best. Although they never allowed passing offenses to be efficient, they could not force any big plays. They had a mediocre sack total despite facing more passing attempts than most teams do, and ditto for interceptions. They had a propensity for giving up big plays at inopportune moments.

There's a reason why this team missed the playoffs despite playing in a very weak 2005 NFC.

Oh, and top ten in a few selected stats really isn't all that impressive.

                            • Last year was their first year playing a 3-4. They were learning it, and they didn't have the LB's.
They have a career end at lolb. Doing ok.

                              • Since when do people say they have a good offense? They have some good talent rushing the ball, an aging QB, one of the best WR in the game today when healthy, an average recieving corp otherwise, an a great pass catching TE.

I'm also not sure anyone said their defense was that good last season. All I remember hearing was that DeMarcus Ware was a monster... and he is. This season there was great talk about the D because they seemed to gel and 'get' the 3-4. They looked impressive in preseason and have done pretty well in the first couple games. That's why you are hearing about the defense (in addition to their great talent, Ware).
