Ok, look, this isnt so hard. How many famous Theodores were there? Put your HEART into the answer.

Damn, I forgot the shared name bit (and thought that the other person also had a duel with the Marquis). Theodor Herzl and the Dreyfus affair (different Dreyfus). "Other historical things" = founding Zionism.
Yes, of course. The other duel occured when Drumont, publisher of an antisemitic paper, insulted Jewish officers as a class, (before the Dreyfus affair) and a jewish cavalry officer challenged Drumont. Mores went as Drumonts second, ended up fighting the second of the Jewish cav officer, another officer named Mayer, and killed Mayer, causing a huge hullabaloo, which Herzl covered, as reporter for the Neue Freie Presse of Vienna.

Drumont was also involved in L'affair Dreyfus, but i dont think Mores was still with him at that point.

Mores also assisted Drumont during his attacks on French pols during the Panama scandal, (the other Panama connection) which also contributed to weakening the Republic, and to antisemitism, setting the stage for l;affaire Dreyfus.

And yes, Herzl did want to be an engineer as a child, admired De Lesseps, and wanted to build a canal at Panama (this before De Lesseps started - DeL was admired for his success at Suez) He attended a technical school from age 10 to 13, before leaving for some combination of poor grades and antisemitism, switching to the more conventional (for upper middle class Jews) liberal artsy school.

You got it young Padiwan, your turn.

          • whats with you people. I posted something very challenging, with all kinds of interesting connections all over - Not just Herzl, but the Panama scandals, Theodore Roosevelt and his time in Medora, etc. I happened in the past few months to have read a bio of TR, McCulloughs "Path between the Seas" and a bio of Herzl, and the interconnections were striking.

You got something good to post, go ahead and post it.

            • Sorry LotM, don't know much about US history. And all my knowledge of Jewish history is what I read in the Old Testament and what I learned about the Holocaust...

                • US history is way cool, Jewish history, since it's for a big part detached from geography, is "harder to grasp"

                    Easy peasy this one.

Name the conflict and the woman, extra servings of Scooby snacks for the location of the statue group.

                    • well its not Pankurst. Seems to be wearing a uniform, vauely Commonwealthy, some kind of 20th century uniform. And she appears white. Not Irish, I think, or South African. The flag looks like it has some kind of eagle on it, I thought Serbia, maybe Rebecca West? But i dont think she ever wore a uniform or had a statue.

                      Im drawing a blank.

Oh, wait, Scooby is probably some kind of hint.

                      No help to me though.

No, just me being irreverent. I remember (History thread, history thread) when 'Scooby Doo' was first shown over here, and it was groovy .

Here she is again in fightin' mood.

Fought in the Easter Rising of 1916 in Ireland and the Civil War.

I suspect the governmental first was becoming an MP back in 1918?

Yes, I wrote 'governmental' rather than 'parliamentary' because that might have made it a tad easier.
