The obvious question is, why was an invasion necessary? Japan had no capacity to strike outwards. We could have simply continued the blockade, and starved millions of Japanese to death instead. No matter how you look at it, the bombs saved lives.

Among the American troops who would have been killed would likely have been my father, who was trained as a naval artillery spotter for the invasion.
My dad too would have probably been among the casualties. He was with the infantry, and his unit was one of the ones designated to be part of the invasion.

What we've learned since is that the Japanese had deduced where the landings were going to be. They were devising new weapons and tactics to use -- underwater kamikazis and what not. It would have been one bloody battle.

          No apoligies for Hiroshima....

I'm not so sure about Nakasaki though.

            A) A hypothetical Soviet invasion would've been much worse and the aftermath much worse for Japan
            B) They'd rather forget, so why dredge it up again?
            C) Who's really crying out for an apology? It's not really the Japanese because whenver they gripe out this they get hit by cries of "Najing", "Korean colonialism", "Bataan", "Pearl Harbor", "Comfort Women", etc.

Discusting imo. These millions of people did not diserve to die. Hiroshima nor Nagazaki.

Didnt the japs have a plan to use uranium bombs dropped from planes launched via subs against the US west coast in august of 1945?

What? No. They didn't have anything close to uranium bombs in August of 1945.

The uranium was due to arrive on a U-boat from germany. But made an about-face after the surrendur.

The plan was in discussion stage. I just watch a showed today about it on HC

OTOH, we are still waiting for Japan to apologise for killing and maiming tens of millions during WWII.
