A speedy end to the war was critical to the survival of millions of Japanese civilians and military alike. Even with the nukes and the surrender tens of thousands died of starvation due to the destruction of the Japanese transportation infrastructure. The longer the U.S. Navy was kept from transporting food to Japan (instead of polishing off the few remaining coastal cargo transports etc.) the more Japanese would have starved to death. Even six more months of war would have likely increased the starvation deaths by an order of magnitude.Originally posted by LordShiva
That's true, too. Land invasion was out of the question.
I agree that there was a strong case to be made to do something like the atomic bombing in order to finally end the war. But I've seen documentaries and photographs and whatnot, and I can't help thinking that there just might have been some other option that ended up being rejected simply because the administration was gearing up for the Cold War.
Okinawa saw over 200,000 killed during hostilities there. It is only about 300 square miles of land area.
As for "gearing up for the Cold War", this seems to be putting the cart well before the horse. In fact the U.S. plans called for (and then implemented) a drastic and immediate reduction of U.S. forces after the war. It was so drastic that sometimes ships could not be brought home due to the fact that there weren't enough qualified men left to sail them home. Even in 1950 with the Cold War actually beginning to heat up U.S. forces were woefully unprepared for war, as was shown by their inability to stand up to the completely overstretched North Korean army. Only the fact that North Korea had no air force or navy to speak of alllowed the U.S. to prevail on the ground due to mobility and the ability to attack enemy supply lines without restraint. He's got the Midas touch.
But he touched it too much!

OTOH, we are still waiting for Japan to apologise for killing and maiming tens of millions during WWII.

millions didn't die, and I'm quite late to the thread.Originally posted by Spec
Yep well, 61 years yesterday since Hiroshima and still no apology from the US. Even though Japan has apologised to China twice atleast for the atrocities against them, the US still haven't apologised.
Discusting imo. These millions of people did not diserve to die. Hiroshima nor Nagazaki.

I will repeat, compare it to the behaviour of Germany.
But he said: OTOH, we are still waiting for Japan to apologise for killing and maiming tens of millions during WWII
So, I say: They did, twice.

Yes you are, and now I know only 214,000 died. Much better than a land invasion and so on...Originally posted by Whoha
