I can't believe how many haters there are in this thread. By not wanting to spend $150 on a single shirt I am a cheapskate? I thought I made a good amount of money but some of you must really be pimping. What I'm after is a look and not the conspicuous consumption which comes from having a huge brand label on the sleeve. If I can get the same look while only spending 1/3 as much then it would be stupid to spend the full amount. Only a shallow person would check labels anyway.

I think you aren't getting it. I don't want to buy the $150 shirt. I want to buy a shirt of a similiar design which costs $50. Got it?

I think you aren't getting it. You're trying to buy clothes just to look like you spend a lot of money on clothes, but for cheap. That's being a tool and a cheapskate

Au contraire. That's being a wise consumer.

That's conspicuous consumption, on the cheap. You are trying to make other people think you have the expensive stuff, but really are wearing a knock off! You want people to think you are wearing an Armani shirt (and where in that shirt you linked does the Armani logo/name appear, btw?), but you aren't.

I disagree. If I wanted people to think I bought the real thing but only wanted to pay a fraction of the cost then I would have bought actual fakes on one of my many trips to east Asia. Instead I am asking for similiar clothes but not fake versions. There is a major difference there. It is like saying I like chocolate, I don't want to pay top dollar for one of the fancy brands, so I am looking for a high quality brand which doesn't carry the price primium of buying one of the fancy brands.

I call that being a good consumer. As supporters of capitalism you should encourage that since the advantages of capitalism rely upon consumers doing exactly that. Weight benifets, quality, design, and cost.

No, there isn't. Clothes for "clubbing" are intended to impress others (otherwise why not just grab a nice t-shirt?), so you are trying to indicate that you have bought designer clothes. This would be unlike chocolate, where you aren't actually trying to impress anyone by the brand you've bought (well, unless it is for a girlfriend as a gift).

The test is when someone says you have a nice shirt. I have a friend that has a purse that she really likes. People say to her, I love your "Coach" purse. She immediately tells them that it's really a knock off for $15. Why? Because if you like the item for itself, you want to tell people that you got a steal. You going to tell a girl that likes your shirt that its really a cheap knockoff for $15 or you gonna let her think you are wearing an Armani?

As supporters of capitalism you should encourage that

As supporters of capitalism we should also encourage people going to restaurants early to get the "Early Bird Special". Doesn't mean we can't call them cheapskates as well.
