to echo molly's comment, charity shops.
i've been buying all my clothes (well excepting pants and socks) from charity/second hand shops for years. i once had to attend a friend's wedding but i didn't own a decent suit. i found a lovely one in a cancer research shop in the uplands, i had it fitted at a local tailor and got it dry cleaned. cost in total, around $100 (imagine the sort of suit you can get 'off the shelf' for that price or even 2-3x the price
). i looked sharp at the wedding, lots of people asked me where i got the suit and commented on it 'must have cost a pretty penny' 'bet it put a dent in your wallet' etc.. little did they know...
