I think his point wasn't that there was something wrong with giving hungry people free food, but that there was a big problem with hippies giving hungry people free food.

When I drove through Sudbury in September I wanted to cry. It was like some kind of nuclear wasteland. My dad informed me it was way better today than it was 25 years ago, when everything was black.
How could anybody live there?

Give me a frickin' break. You think Sudbury is a major city?
I doubt your area has the acute problems that I am talking about and Orlando is dealing with.
Even the suburbs and most non-downtown areas in the US don't have this type of problem. They send all of their problems to the downtown areas of our major cities.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I don't think I am being squeamish regarding this. It's a big, in-your-face type of problem. It would be hard to ignore.

First, homelessness is not a problem specific to one location. Homelessness exists across the country, and is clearly effected by Federal laws. While steps can be taken on the local level, steps can and should be taken on the national level.
Second, here's an interesting fact. A male veteran is twice as likely to be homeless as a man of the same age who is not a veteran. Let me repeat that. Men who offer their lives to defend our country are twice as likely to be homeless as men who do not.
This is simply wrong.
