Well, I hope to God they resign Spacek. They're supposedly in talks, but he's out there for anyone to grab right now...

And, quite frankly, I think he'd be worth 3 mil/ year.

Tarnstrom, I'd love to have back, but it doesn't look likely. I don't think they've even initated negotiations yet.

    • Rumour is Pronger and a 6th round pick to Florida for Boumeester, Horton, Yakubov and a 2nd round pick. Rumour is the deal is done pending Boumeester and Horton re-signing something Lowe would like (they are RFAs).

Are you KIDDING ME? The Leafs overpayed McCabe, Kaberle, and now they're overpaying Kubina. All of them are offensive defensemen with average, AT BEST, defensive games.

They're going to leave Raycroft out to dry, and it's going to be AWESOME.

Florida would be immensely retarded for such a thing to happen, but that's not out of the realm of possibility.

I thought Keenan shot that down quickly a long time ago?

            - 2 defensemen: Ohlund, Salo
            - 2 goalies: Luongo, Cloutier

If they signed 8 more forwards and five more d-men at the league minimum, that puts the payroll at $38 million...

That gives him about $5M to upgrade 13 roster slots from the minimum payscale...and even then, starting the season at $43M is asking for trouble.
With the Mitchell signing, he now has $2M to upgrade 12 roster slots.

            • Alyn McCauley (26 points in 76 games for the Sharks) signed by LA for 6mil 3 years.

What is wrong with the math of these UFAs so far?

              • And you want to see an example of a terrific signing? $6M for Blake to LA. That is just crazy, he's worth more than that.

That was before he saw what Jovo signed for. He had an offer in for him that wasn't even close to what Jovo signed for.

Keenan is a fan of Pronger. He traded Shanahan to the Whalers to get him for St. Louis.

I don't agree. The way dmen are being way over-priced and then you factor in Sillinger (32 goals, good two way player, signs for 2mil a year) I'd be tempted to pull a Carolina.

Go with reasonable value on the blue line in front of good goal tending, and then line up the forwards for run and gun. Oilers hockey!

This question was asked last year - iirc, they simply cannot.

                        • Yeah. Found it.
The official National Hockey League website including news, rosters, stats, schedules, teams, and video.

Hi Phil, since the new CBA I have been wondering how the NHL enforces the salary cap system. Is there a fine for disobeying it? From what I can tell the New Jersey Devils (according to TSN.CA) has about a 41+ million dollar payroll with something like 20 players signed. What will the NHL do if they exceed the 39M cap over the year? Also, though less important it appears, how does the NHL force teams to spend more than the 21M I think it is?

                          -- Joseph

Hi Joseph. I passed your question along to NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly for an answer.

He said "a team can never find itself in a position of not being in compliance with the cap. Teams can be over $39 million, but only if it has a long-term injury exception in place. Contracts or transactions that would put the Club out of compliance with the cap (either below $21.5 or above $39) would not be approved by the League Office."

The league must make calculations before the deals are approved.

I guess that that makes it improbable that Van and TO are planning to 'blow the cap' and then make trades.

                          • Here's a chilling bit I found while looking.
The official National Hockey League website including news, rosters, stats, schedules, teams, and video.

I was wondering if you could clarify what is up with the new CBA in regards to the salaries of retired players. A while back, there was news about Dave Andreychuk probably retiring soon and I read a bunch of articles saying how the remainder of his contract will still count towards Tampa Bay's salary cap. Same thing with Zigmund Palffy's retirement. I heard people saying the Penguins are stuck with the remainder of his $13.5 million salary. That would eat up a lot of their salary cap in the next two years.

What is up with that? How can this be? If this is true, is the NHL trying to punish teams for signing long contracts or something? I've been wondering about that for a while because I've heard different people say different things. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work!

                            -- Kelvin Cheng

Hi Kelvin. Also went to Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly about your question. Here is his response.

He's right on Andreychuk, wrong on Palffy. For players who enter into multi-year contracts at age 35 or older, the second and all subsequent years of the contract count against the Club's cap, regardless of whether or where the player is playing.

KLowe has taken a big risk with the Roloson contract (but it is unlikely the Oilers are going to want to spend the $44mil in any event).

Likewise the Kings with Blake, the Blues with Weight, and the Canes with Brind'Amour.

There's nothing wrong with $2 million for a guy like McCauley. He's well known for a being a strong leader (he's usually an assistant captain). He's also a strong checker. Definitely a quality role player.

                              • How many people can you sign at $2mil a year for a journeyman?

I guess Nonis and JFj are about to show us.
