True, but there's no reason to not think that The Church took advantage of his stroke to quit for him.

Oh, the later is most likely true.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

Correct. If one sits down and makes a list of the characteristics of doomsday cults, Falun Gong is a very good fit.

            These characteristics are:

            - the leader claims to be a god (or some other powerful supernatural being)
            - the followers worship the leader as a god
            - The leader/cult predicts an end of the world
            - The cult thinks of all sorts of ways to squeeze money from the followers
            - The leader lives in luxury (some calls it decadence)
            - The followers are demanded absolute obediance and act like sheep
            - The followers are isolated from the society physically/mentally (or both)

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Whatever you could use to describe Chairman Mao, "decadence" is not one of it.

Yah right. He slept with those female revolutionary comrades out of doctrinal purity.

Still, even if indulging his sex drive weren't decadent, that's still only one point down.

This is why scientology is closely monitored in France, and falls into the laws regarding cults.

This is something the Yanks criticize us for, btw.

We beleive you can join any cult you like, as long as they don't murder/child abuse/other crumes.

A cult isn't bad because one persons religion is another persons cult. And visa versa.

Neither have I. I positively swelled with pride when I heard that the Greek Orthodox Church helped kick their sorry butts out of the Balkans. By all means, continue cracking down on them.

And JM...the CoS is an intrinsically criminal organization. Blackmail and extortion are among their recognized and officially condoned procedures for dealing with critics, though their PR tries to hide it. And that's the mild stuff. Look up "Operation Snow White," "Operation Freakout," or "Special Auditing Procedure R2-45" sometime. Especially R2-45, I just learned about that recently. Would the founder of a normal religion invent a pretentious codename for shooting someone in the forehead with a .45 pistol?
