  • Mastroeni slid a long way before made contact, so the impact wasn't that great. That's why I think it should have been a yellow. If he had come in the same way from closer in, then a red would be understandable. But he didn't slide through the guy, so I don't agree with the call.

    • I think I figured out all the possible outcomes for Group E:

      Code:
IF THE UNITED STATES DEFEATS GHANA:

Ghana is eliminated from the tournament and the United States would advance
under one of the following scenarios:

      	- An Italy defeat of the Czech Republic. Italy would be the top seed
from Group E and the United States would be the #2 seed.

      	- A draw of the Italy/Czech Republic game, combined with one of the
      	  following:

      		- The United States defeats Ghana by at least five goals

      		- The United States defeats Ghana by exactly four goals, AND
the Czech Republic scores no more than one goal in their draw
      		  with Italy

In either case, Italy would be the top seed from Group E and the
United States would be the #2 seed.

              - A Czech Republic defeat of Italy, combined with one of the following:

              	- The margin of victory for the United States' defeat of Ghana
combined with the Czech Republic's defeat of Italy is six
              	  goals or greater

              	- The margin of victory for the United States' defeat of Ghana
combined with the Czech Republic's defeat of Italy is exactly
five goals, AND the United States outscores Italy by at least
              	  three goals

If the margin of victory for the United States' defeat of Ghana
combined with the Czech Republic's defeat of Italy is exactly five
goals, AND the United States outscores Italy by exactly two goals,
lots would be drawn between the United States and Italy to determine
the #2 seed from Group E (with the Czech Republic earning the top
                seed).

In all other scenarios, the United States would be eliminated from the
tournament and the seeding for Group E would depend on the outcome of the
Italy/Czech Republic match (with Italy being the top seed in case of a draw and
the Czech Republic earning the top seed with a defeat of Italy).

IF THE UNITED STATES AND GHANA DRAW:

The United States is eliminated from the tournament and Ghana advances under
      one of the following scenarios:

      	- An Italy defeat of the Czech Republic. Italy would be the top seed
from Group E and Ghana would be the #2 seed.

      	- A Czech Republic defeat of Italy, combined with one of the following:

              	- The margin of victory for the Czech Republic's defeat of
Italy is three goals or greater

              	- The margin of victory for the Czech Republic's defeat of
Italy is exactly two goals, AND Ghana outscores Italy by at
              	  least two goals

In either case, the Czech Republic would be the top seed from Group E
and Ghana would be the #2 seed.

In all other scenarios, Ghana would be eliminated from the tournament and the
seeding for Group E would depend on the outcome of the Italy/Czech Republic
match (with Italy being the top seed in case of a draw and the Czech Republic
earning the top seed with a defeat of Italy).

IF THE UNITED STATES LOSES TO GHANA:

The United States is eliminated from the tournament and Ghana advances, with
the other participant determined by the outcome of the Italy/Czech Republic
      match.

      	- If Italy wins, Italy is the top seed from Group E and Ghana is the #2
      	  seed.

      	- If the Czech Republic wins, seedings would depend on the outcomes of
      	  the matches.

      		- If Ghana defeats the United States by more goals than the
Czech Republic defeats Italy by, Ghana would be the top seed
from Group E and the Czech Republic would be the #2 seed.

      		- If Ghana defeats the United States by the same number or
fewer goals than the Czech Republic defeats Italy by, the
Czech Republic would be the top seed from Group E and Ghana
      		  would be the #2 seed.

      	- If the Italy/Czech Republic match ends in a draw, Ghana is the top
seed from Group E and Italy advances as the #2 seed.

            • Oh lord... now people are ripping Arena a new one because he didn't bring on Eddie Johnson at the end. It seems they don't realize that when you are 9 v 10 it may be a good idea to keep a sub in reserve in case of an injury, so you aren't playing 2 down.

That and McBride is a far better defender than Johnson (has EJ ever defended anyone?)

Yes, FIFA is pretty stubborn in this, I don't know why. Probably it would "send the wrong message" if an innocent player would get away. Just imagine not to apply a sentence if you find the suspect not guilty!
                Crime would skyrocket!

Good sportsmanship from Peter Ceh (Czech?) though!

Ceterum, I found all the expusions in the Italy-USA match justified. Yet, several offside decisions against Italy were dead wrong, esp. the one before the miracle shot that should have been the 2-1.
                Well, never mind.

Now it'll be tough in this group.

To be honest, I absolutely dislike the idea of USA reaching the next round. Stick to Baseball, AF, Basketball, Ice Hockey, La Crosse and women's soccer, that should be enough. I'm all for Ghana now.

However, I hope I'm still impartial enough to judge the US-team (and the ref.) relatively fairly. Sure, the Italian foul was worse, but still it expulsing the 2 US players was not obscene either.

                      • what a game by USA! best game of the tourney so far. I think the game should be played with only 10 guys on the field for both teams, its a lot more exciting.

                              • It would surprise me greatly if Brazil and Croatia weren't the teams to go through from their group, we'll se what happens today though, the one thing speaking for Australia is a real winning coach in Guus Hiddink.
