        • Oh, and I know several couples who go by a hyphenated version, by the way.

Good thing Quebec is there to stop them from doing so legally.

          This is just sad.

I don't have a girlfriend, but I do know a number of men who've taken their wives' names.

(Swedish law allows for either party to assume the other's, or both to keep their own. You can't switch, however.)
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

No kidding. Any other provinces in Canada that prevent the woman from taking the man's name if she wants? Any provinces that force her to do so?

              • No, because the other provinces don't suck. But be careful with your criticisms; apparently oncle boris considers it paternalistic if you have an opinion on how Quebec does things.

He seriously embodies the attitude that our government has. It's almost frightening.

I should perhaps add that Sweden is sufficiently post-feminist that taking your wife's name isn't seen as a political statement. The assumption is they picked the "cooler" name.

Plain no. You may not care about taking your girlfriend's name because of the male condition in general (in this case it would indeed be a free choice). I'm sure you wouldn't be of the same opinion if you were a woman in 1900 and forced to take another name.

I tried to defend the law from an affirmative action perspective, which is still a better explanation than the automatic 'Quebec sucks' clause. I don't see why changing your name should be an absolute and fundamental right either. In any case, you're still *****ing because Quebec won't allow you to perpetuate an antiquated custom deeply rooted in sexual inequality. Whether or not the interdiction is still justified does not matter - it probably was in the 80s, and it just hasn't been reviewed since.

                      Wow. You're a tool. It's not 1900.

                      • If it was 1900, by the way, I'd probably be a little bit more concerned about the fact that I couldn't vote, couldn't go to school and was subject to random beatings at the hands of my male relatives or husband than I would be about my last name.

You failed miserably. Because this reasoning is stupid. And the fact that this reasoning is what prompted the change in Quebec is what proves Quebec is stupid. For the millionth time.

I have nothing to do with it, you crazy person. I don't give a flying **** what my wife calls herself. She does, though, and it pisses me off that you want to treat her like a ****ing child. She has a master's degree in medical radiation physics. She spends most of every day making life and death decisions about cancer patients' treatments. Good thing Quebec was there to stop an intelligent, educated woman from making up her own ****ing mind.
