Everyone has to die so that God will not be a dick. Isn't that obvious?

This is probably why the Gnostics talk of two gods, the false god of the old testiment and the real creator, Jeshua's "father/mother"
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

I think anyone who can take stories like that as events that actually happened to real people needs to rethink things.
Most people read it as a story (Teaching), not as a real occurance. It has been argued that it is even presented that way.

It's probably part of why. Another part is, I dare say, influence from the Iranian dualism of Ohrmizd and Ahriman (AKA Ahura Mazda and Angra Mainyu, AKA umpteen other variants).
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

Job is definately what killed the ME religions for me. Flirted breiefly with paganism before becoming an aethist.

                  Heh.

My dad likes to mess with an uber religious Aunt of mine. She's Catholic (at least so she says nowadays... started Catholic, went into some cult - Rosy Krushan or somesuch, then eventually came back to Catholicism, just in time to marry a well-off fellow dying of Altzimers). Anyway, he came up with this "theory" that God was really Satan. After all, look at the world? Who do YOU think is running things! Satan, of course!

I wonder if he got a rise out of her. He so dearly loves it.

For me, the Leviticus-NT thing is most easily explained not by 'new covenants' or change-of-hearts, but by the simple fact that the Bible is the word of man, and not the word of god.

It cannot, in my view, be the word of god, because there is no god to utter words on this or anything else. It was the total nonsense written in the old testament that let me to this conclusion, because if there was an omnipotent deity s/he would not embarrass themselves with such tangled and embarrasing contradictions.

                        yeah me too

I actually wanted to believe in christianity, I probably still do. But trying to understand how the bible could be the word of God is what finally made me give up on the effort.

Didn't have much luck with the koran either but that would be a different thread.

Maybe materials Aneeshm listed will seem a bit more...divinely inspired for lack of a better phrase.
