  • I can see how you would see it that way, but for me the humor part was the policy poking. All the off color stuff was just normal crap joked about hundreds of times over years.

And I don't think Mexican illegals expect that, I think Mexico and Mexican American citizens expect that.

Sure. People have been racist xenophobes for hundreds of years.

Seriously, though, perhaps I shouldn't have come in the middle of the debate and worded things quite so strongly. For that I apologize - it was over the top. The "joke" really rubs me the wrong way.

      • Personally I really didn't laugh snicker or otherwise to the joke as it was, meh.

What struck me as more reprehensible in this entire thread was the moral superiority assumed by the PC police. Theirs is the only view. Baahhh, pthhh!

Its attitudes of that exact nature that are indeed the essence and definition of ignorance and bigotry IMO. (not directed at you Arrian)

          • Your right, I guess alot of the humor comes form the fact that it is also lampooning the policies of my own government.
Backtracking from the indefensible, I see. Yes, I'm drowning in the depth.

What part of it poking at US policy did you not understand?
What about US policy says that Mexican illegals don't know how to drive?

And that wasn't even the presumed basis of the humour. Please try reading next time:

"Actually, I think the humor doesn't come from the illegal immigrants in the US at all, it comes more from the Mexican governments blatant hypocrisy of policy."

But right, none of the humour comes at the expense of the illegal immigrants. It's all about the Mexican gov't. Oh wait, also the US gov't. And umm.. some off color jokes. That's it.

The whole joke setup was a letter addressed to President and congressional policy makers.
Yes, because immigration has recently been debated by Congress. They're trying to pass a new law. The author is saying that American illegals in Mexico don't expect these things from the Mexican gov't, so Mexican illegals shouldn't expect these things from our gov't. And therefore Congress and Bush should "fix" the situation. The piece is not that complicated.

            • Ramo,

I have changed my mind. Now I think the humor is actually derived more from your illfated expidition to a thead that your side lost a long time ago.

So this joke has all kinds of dynamics.

              Please continue...

What part of the joke said that. The joke implied laws are simply being ignored. You know like having mandatory car insurance and passing driving tests and the like.

OMFG are you that stupid? It was Patroklos that implied Mexican hypocrisy I simply stated the idiocy of US policy.

Or is it a matter of course for you to simply stereotype people and assume they all say and think the same way?

I have revised my earlier estimates of you, you are more than a piece of work, you actually have two strong points, illiteracy and ignorance.

And that of course implies that all Mexican immigrants are indeed expecting these accomodations. NOOOOOO it simply implies these types of excesses are symptomatic of freakin problems in the US.

But please again tell me what I'm thinking great Carnac.

Ramo, of course humor can be offensive. I think it is offensive if it has racial slurs. But anything that takes the Nth degree of speculation and inference as to the author's intent, I would claim is not offensive. Like I said, I'll show this to my mexican friends and see what they think.
[quote]The only way any of this makes sense is if the PC brigade is trying to compensate for something. Whether it is your feelings, or someone in your family, or whatever, I don't know. But it's pretty clear you are over compensating.[\quote]

as far as this goes, he presents it as true without giving anything to suggest that it is so. I don't think you need to have any assumptions or preconceived notions to think something is funny. In fact, I would propose it is usually quite the opposite. You see something that you realize is a exaggeration of your actual experience, and it strikes you as humorous. Perhaps if one had no experience, then he would have to rely on preconceived notions. So unless you can divine each person's experience, I think it is wrong to apply a label to them...

I guess your Racist uncle might explain why you are a little over sensitive about this. You know, you really don't have to compensate for him.

lol...i'm afraid i don't qualify. I'm particularly fond of foreign things, foreign places and foreign people. Yes yes, even mexicans. Which may have something to do with the 8 day trip i'm taking to mexico in May. Another example of someone throwing words around without either knowing what that mean, or having enough information to reasonably do so.

                      Congrats
and the trip to mexico? kind of illogical for a xenophobe to go plant themselves on an island of those they are unreasonable afraid of, eh?

(i'm not even talking about the 40+ other times I've been to mexico)
and there were several other times someone tried to argue against one of my points, and when i countered, they dropped it because it was clear they were wrong.

I'll ammend my previous statement. If you think I am a racist, bigot, xenophone or anything along those lines, you are a fool, and you clearly are making that judgement out of ignorance.

Dear President Bush and all you *******s in congress:

I'm about to plan a little trip with my family and extended family, and I would like to ask you to assist me. I'm going to walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico, and I need to make a few arrangements. I know you can help with this.

I plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws. I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do here.
I lived in Mexico. They're really not uptight about such things.

                        1. Free medical care for my entire family.
Maybe you live in a different US, but "free" medical care is almost impossible to get for anyone. I've been uninsured and on disability, and I've looked. When you do find facilities, they're open for a few hours a week, full of all sorts of people sicker than you are, and you wait ridiculous amounts of time for limited treatment.

                        2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not.
Has nothing to do with "illegal" immigrants, and there's a pesky little thing called the First Amendment. Most "bureacrats" don't speak squat for Spanish. But go figure, with tens of millions of US citizens of some form of Hispanic ancestry, there are quite a few bureaucrats in most parts of the country who do speak at least some Spanish.

And BTW, you can find quite a few officials in Mexico who speak English.

                        3. All government forms need to be printed in English.
So? People who don't speak English fluently aren't exempt from the zillions of taxes they pay. They're paying taxes, they should have forms in whatever major language they want. Don't be bothered by details like First Amendment protections of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Pendejo.

                        4. I want my kids to be taught by English-speaking teachers.
The vast majority of teachers in the US are monolingual, and Hispanics across the US pay billions in property and other taxes which fund public schools, so why the hell shouldn't there be multilingual teachers? Hell, given the ignorance of most Amurkins, the more our school teachers know the better.

                        5. Schools need to include classes on American culture and history.
You're right. Much better that Amurkins remain ignorant clods, and everyone else too.

                        6. I want my kids to see the American flag flying on the top of the flag pole at their school with the Mexican flag flying lower down.
Show me a US public school which flies any foreign flag above the US flag?

                        7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both breakfast and lunch.
WTF does this have to do with immigration?

                        8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy access to government services.
A driver's license doesn't get you access to most government services which aren't freely available to anyone.

                        9. I do not plan to have any car insurance, and I won't make any effort to learn local traffic laws.
Lots of white trash are uninsured, and drive like idiots. It's illegal no matter who you are, and nobody gets a free pass if they get caught.

                        10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from Pres. Fox to leave me alone, please be sure that all police officers speak English.
No great number of US police speak Spanish, and to the extent the US has a lot of ethnic communities all over (including German, Polish, Russian, and Swedish speaking whiteys), most police agencies would tell you it's useful to have people who speak the languages and have the trust of the communities they patrol.

                        11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.
First Amendment is a glorious thang, aint' it? Except for white people who want to use brown people as an excuse. BTW, I've flown the American flag from my house in Mexico, had flag decals, and celebrated July 4 there. Nobody seemed to give a rat's ass, and in fact, in the aftermath of 9/11, people were pretty supportive.

                        12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, and don't enforce any labor laws or tax laws.
Well, pinche baboso, get a job pickin' lettuce, taking care of some yuppies' kid, or sewing clothes, and get shafted with your choice of overwithheld taxes the employer never pays and you'll never see, or cash work below minimum wage, and right, the labor laws don't get enforced, because they protect the worker.

                        13. Please tell all the people in the country to be extremely nice and never say a critical word about me, or about the strain I might place on the economy.
Yeah, everyone is always nice to the leetle brown peeple. Carajo. But God forbid they speak out and don't just swallow horse**** without saying a word. After all, everything wrong in the US at the moment is their fault.

Didn't get bin Whoden? Damn wetbacks.
                        Didn't get al Whowazati? Ditto.
                        No free oil? Ditto.
                        Record budget deficits? Ditto
                        Record trade deficits? Ditto.

I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all the people who come to the U.S. from Mexico. I am sure that Pres. Fox won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.

Thank you so much for your kind help.

                        Sincerely,

                        Paul Revere
The ignorance and mediocrity of this horse**** seems to indicate we need more brown people and less white morons. BTW, Revere was an immigrant.
