Was using 2000 census, not 2004 estimate

I'd also like to point out that the link you provided shows overall growth in the actual area under discussion (Fairfax + Pr George's + Montgomery + DC + Alex) at about 14% in the 14 years from 1990 to 2004. Which gives about 31% growth over 30 years if trend remains constant.

Growth in ****ing Fauquier county 40 miles away from DC doesn't mean ****...

      you assuming linear or exponential?

Some of the Faquier Co growth is definitely DC Metro growth. You should do some drives on 95 from Richmond to wilmington. DC area is stretching south big time.

Whenever I see a percentage growth, I think of CAGRs.

The area under discussion includes Loudon, which is getting 4 stops in the Dulles extension. It also includes Anne Arundel and Howard, which would get the majority of the stops in a green line extension to BWI. It also could include Prince William, if the southern lines are extended.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. expo, of course.

1.14^(30/14). More like 32%. Was estimating without calculator before.

Still only showing about 16% growth in 14 years.

What sort of population explosion are you looking for?

                      (a) The census has a habit of not counting illegal aliens. The Washington area is awash in illegals (The Pew Center says about 10% of the population is illegals).

                      (b) Recently, DC has turned around its population decline. The census has not yet captured this turnaround.

California gets screwed on that. We have 6-7 million illegals who we continue to provide services for (schooling for kids, public health care like shots, etc) but which the feds don't reimbuse us for. I totally think it is a good idea to make sure kids are educated and people get vacinated for diseases but I do wish the feds would pay for the problem they have intentionally created.

The don't enforce the border controls because the companies want cheap workers but it is the state and local governments who must pay for the feds abdication of responsibility.

Here's an article in today's WaPo about building an extension of the green line from Greenbelt to BWI airport.

BWI and Maryland officials are scared that they will be put out of business by Dulles with metrorail.

Sounds to me like the Maryland politicians are lowballing the cost pretty drastically. They say the 20-mile extension would cost $2.5 billion, or $125 million a mile, whereas the 23-mile extension to Dulles is costing $175 million a mile.

Also, they say the federal government will pay 90% of the funding, but that seems a little unrealistic, considering the limited amount the feds are paying for the Dulles extension.

90% is a bit high, but maybe they're angling for a local Congressman to promise cash in return for a dedicated MD source of funding a la Congressman Tom Davis.
If you look around and think everyone else is an *******, you're the *******.

I'm not sure to what you are referring when you mention Davis. Can you clue me in?

I thought the dedicated source of funding for metrorail idea was shelved.
