Washington metrorail to be extended to Dulles airport
Why not just make more lines and stations? Now that the system is operating at full capacity, they can now disentangle the system.
I don't think they're going to double track it.
I'm thinking double tracked/express lines for the airports and the heaviest commuter stations to help speed things up. An express line from someplace, say Metro Center or Rosslyn/Falls Church to Dulles in addition to commuter lines would help untangle tourist/airport traffic from commuter traffic. It would also be a boon for commuters from the densest/most populated areas allowing them to get in and out of DC more rapidly would help boost Metro traffic.

Following them are: Montreal, Toronto, DC, Chicago and Boston (in that order). After that, you start to get into much smaller systems.
Won't be long before the DC metrorail surpasses Montreal and Toronto.

If you're talking the metro area, I don't believe your projection, considering that it has more than doubled in size in the last 30 years.

DC. Metro area may grow more, but had hard time finding forecast quickly.
Also, given that there's still plenty of room in DC left over from white flight of 80s and 90s you'd have to wonder about the suburbs growing much more than city itself.
Crosspost. Of course, I think you know that the city of DC is only about 10% of the metro area in any event. Much different dynamics than Baltimore.

It no longer includes Baltimore or the WV exurbs. DC metro is about 5 million. Baltimore metro is a little more than 2 million.
Edit: Oops, I mean the DC metro area is about 6 million. The city of DC is less than 10% of the total. Most of the population can be served with expansion of metrorail.

Kitty, the growth or lack of growth of the residential DC population is kind of irrelevant to a discussion of suburban needs. I wonder if they could already justify that train. Reston is just buttswamped. And needs better access to DC for oh...the last 30 years or so.
