Here's LA at 100.4 miles in altitude. That's the smallest I could go and get it all in the screen (well, there's some missing to the E and W, but not very much).

The image of LA I posted is confusing, since it's hard to tell what's the built up area and what are the mountains.

Actually, that picture of LA you posted also has San Diego in it (that's the lower part, below the "bottleneck".

It's all built up. That area around Corona, Moreno Valley, etc looks like nothing but mountains, but it's mostly subdivisions and stuff. There are some mountains, of course, but even they have houses, subdivisions, etc.

Now, to see why those two are really big, lets compare them to... Moscow:

I kid you not, at this scale, the entire glorious Moscow seems to be the brown blotch at the middle. Some kancho street gangs in Tokyo control more area than Moscow spans.

here's my city at the 20 mi/50 km scale on google maps.

all the gray is city. But it also includes Henderson, North Las Vegas, and Boulder city on that gray blotch. Technically they are separate cities.

Yes, the first county seal had crosses in it. My God, crosses!! All signs of religion must be stamped out!

You'll notice that even the Greek goddess Pomona has been expunged from the second seal, to be replaced by an American native woman offering acorns. -- That started a firestorm amount women and native Americans about her apparent subservient roll.

Filling out an entire county? Holy f*ck. The biggest city I've been in is Minneapolis, the city limits fill a large chunk of Hennepin Country, which is a fairly small county, but there is still large parts of the county outside the city limits. The though of a city filling up an entire large county boggles my mind.

I've been to Minneapolis (and will be again in August).

It's a small city. Still a city, but it's small.

L.A. is HUGE, ala New York huge.

That's pretty much what happened to Middlesex. London used to be within Middlesex many, many years ago but it just ended up covering the lot. Along with significant proportions of Surrey, Essex and Kent Again, London is a funny one to count, the London boroughs constitute a bit over 7 million, and that constitutes Greater London, of which Ken is the mayor of...but there is a lot of sprawl and commuter belt beyond that which would signficantly up London's population if counted...

So I take you are not interested in going for a 'little' walk across L.A.?
This space is empty... or is it?
