  • Los Angeles is friggin' BIG!!

Everyone knows that the City of Los Angeles is the second largest city in American. That's nothing new.

But I just learned some mind boggling facts about L.A. County.

We're not only the most populous county in the nation, but if we were divided in half, we'd almost be the two largest counties in the nation.

We have more people than 43 states.

In the next twenty years, we're expected to add the equivalent of the City of Chicago to our population.

--But what I don't understand is why all 9.9 million Angelenoes have to be in front of me on the freeway and be going really slow!

By 1910, 1 out of every 8 cars in America was registered in Los Angeles county.

      Drive in reverse. Problem solved.

Isn't it L.A. that has a governing council of only 5 people, with a chance of substitution about equal to that of the U.S. Supreme Court?

And yet LA is only the 37th largest city in the world - by large margins too.

Seoul, the largest, is almost three times the size of LA!

If you have a chance, pick up Sir Peter Hall's Cities in Civilization from the library and read the section on Los Angeles. He explains how it introduced the car culture to the world from the very beginnings in the early 1900's and discusses in depth the development of the "freeway" system of roads.

He isn't a nutter and effectively slams shuts any conspiracy theories about GM destroying the trollies by analyzing Henry Huntington's rate of returns from 1901 to 1930, showing that the decline in the trollies revenues and profitability started in the 1910's, even before GM was a corporate entity.

Los Angeles County has 10,000,000 people in it. You're talking about the city limits, which only includes 1/3 of the county.

Also considered part of "metro LA" is Riverside County (1,900,000) and Orange County (3,000,000) for a total of 14,900,000 people for LA proper.

If you read carefully there is a link for the same calculations for Urban Areas.

Now LA is in 12th position with 12.2 millions, a third of a city like Tokyo using similar principle...

I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

About the same time East L.A. started growing.
