Today on the radio they were talking about this exact issue, and there was story after story about women lying to the guy about being on birth control for one reason or another...from getting out of the military to hoping for marriage.
that's why it's a good idea to videotape (with sound of course) all sexual encounters.

this gives me an idea for a thread poll. I can't make it here, so I'll have to make it at CG.

There is inherent risk in sex. IN having sex, you should be stepping up the the responsibility of it as well.

So what? She had to spend 9 months pregnant, plus all the risk that involves (read what Dashi posted), plus now she has to spend HER MONEY on the kid, and her time as well.

Some money from him in NO WAY even remotely makes thinsg "better". All it does is lessen her burden some.

I don't think it needs to be explained.

Nor does your guide to human rights according to genomes need to be explained.

People should just accept the roles society assigns to them. No need to question, or seek to improve.

            • I'm just not buying the idea that men can abstain from having sex with a woman. Women can abstain from having sex too. Is it so much to ask for women to take some responsibility for their own bodies?

I can't help but think some of these laws are demeaning to women. And treat women like they are too stupid to take care of their own bodies. So the laws are designed to put the responsibility soley on the man.

I don't know, maybe I'm just playing devil's advocate. I don't really care. The laws are pretty much fair. As if a man raises a child, I think they make women pay child support. So that sounds fair.

Good thing blacks did not accept the roles society expected of them in the 1950s and 60s.

                    Well said.

I don't see how you can take men to task for not accepting their responsibility, while at the same time holding another standard for women.

She made the choice and the decision to sleep with him. If she didn't want to accept the potential consequences of that decision, then it's the same deal for her as for the man. Don't sleep with the guy if you aren't ready to have a kid.

I agree, she shouldn't have to go at it alone. That's why it takes two people coming together to make one of these babies in the first place. However, she understands all of this beforehand, that she might get pregnant, and might end up with the responsibility of having to care for her child.

The point remains, he has a responsibility inherent in the fact that there is a child who is the result of his genetic material, which he willingly gave without signing away parenting rights (like to a sperm bank).

Lesson at the end of the day, Sperm are a powerful thing. Be responsible with them.
just to clarify - as a general rule you CANT sign away parenting rights, since its the childs right. If a woman goes up to you and says sleep with me, i want a kid, and heres a contract relieving you of responsibility, after the kid is born you can still be sued to support him.

When artificial insemination became practical, state legislatures had to pass specific laws to to have the womans husband automatically considered the legal father. This was done because it was deemed that artificial insemination was something it was in societys interest to make possible. It was NOT done to establish a precedent for child support being anything less than a childs right which cannot be alienated by word or deed of the mother.

It does show the slippery slope that can be created by the most well intentioned laws however.

Its not at all too much to ask. We SHOULD call on women to be responsible, and not to get themselves into these situations. However when they do so, its still their body.

what law prevents a man from going to a clinic, and having saline solution (i think thats how its done?) injected up his genital organs?

None I think. Ergo, no difference in rights by genome.

The issue remains that a fetus must gestate inside the woman. There is therefore a clear difference between the position of the man and the woman regarding pregnacy itself.

If the woman seeks a medica procedure to end pregancy, her right. A man does not get pregnant, so its not even an issue for him.

As I have said over and over, you can't legislate "equality" in a situation where biology has created a very clear and obvious difference.

                              • Why are we arguing over who can abstain from having sex with whom? I can abstain from having sex with both of you and just to show you I'm gonna abstain right NOW! So there!

I think that everyone should have the right to know his or her rights before each and every act of sexual congress. The Supreme Cout should publish a short speech that will be printed on tiny cards and passed out to the entire adult population. Persons on the verge engaging in sex, married or not married, will be required to read the speech to their potential opposite sex partners. The speech will go something like this:

"You have the right to know that I (you) may get pregnant. You and I may be held liable for any conception resulting from this union. If I (you) get pregnant you have the right to medical consultation. Should you desire to contest your responsibility you have the right to an attorney. In the event that you (or I) am unable to obtain medical and legal council one may be obtained at the free clinic."
"I say shoot'em all and let God sort it out in the end!
