Probably has more to do with who the Romanians were allies of and what they participated in whilst invading the USSR.

Russia has a long history of aggression and expansionism (incl occupying and annexing bits of Rumania in 1940), and of not treating its conquered subjects very well. It's hardly surprising Russia has something of a bad rep in much eastern and central Europe. Being the Red Menace did not notably increase their popularity.

2) Excuse me, was it Russia who attacked Romania at the first place? Was it Russia who long before this attack created special extermination teams whose only goal was to "clean-up" occupied territories from "untermensches"? 3) Without Romanian attack and the following occupation of Soviet territory, there would be no Soviet "occupation" of Romania. And after what Romanians done on Soviet territory, they should praise all their goods that Soviets didn't do the same with them.

6) You seem to forget that aside Russia which laid in ruins, the only devastation USA saw on its soil was Pear-Harbor. Russia saw dozens of its own Pearl-Harbors each day out of 1418 days of war.

7) You seem to forget that Russians have to re-build their country from scratch. The country destroyed by unprovoked surprise attack from the West.

8) You seem to forget that Russians had nobody to help them in that proccess and had to rely on themselves only, while our (and yours) former enemies enjoed your generous credits. You whom this war made richer now helped your former enemies, but not your ally who contributed for victory more than anyone else and who suffered from this war as nobody else.

9) You seem to forget that Eastern Europe suffered both from war and Nazi occupation much more than the Western Europe (just compare the scale of warfare and Nazi occupation policies, let's say in France and Poland).

10) You also seem to forget that Eastern Europe was always poorer than the Western Europe.

11) You seem to forget that USA was always richer than USSR.

12) And finally, you seem to fail to understand that Russia didn't have the luxury of being weak, but gentle. Russia needed allies and buffer zones, because you created NATO, were extremely hostile towards us and wanted to destroy us. Had we were weak, had no allies and no buffer zones, you would attack us and completely exterminate us, no doubt.

You don't understand, Spiffor - the Nazi's and associated allies were really, really bad. That means that anything the Soviets did was perfectly justified and never reprehensible.
