Maybe, but I'm pretty sure the kind of cartoon you linked are pretty rare. I mean, its the kind of cartoon the Nazis published in Der Sturmer. If a local newspaper would publish a cartoon of Sharon eating children, there would certainly be a public uproar.

Yet he and a lot of enlightenment philosophers, like Locke, wrote about tolerance.
Indeed - thats the point - that tolerating a group does NOT imply respecting that groups beliefs. Now maybe thats wrong as some say, but I think thats the enlightenment viewpoint.

    • @nostromo : Take a look at the link in post #181 - it's a series of articles by wich JP won a second place in an EU journalist award. It's not exactly the kind of stuff hate mongering papers usually print.

        • Btw, when I talk about Muslim hate mongers, I mean hate mongers who are Muslims. For example, I'm thinking about the Danish Imams who brought some fake cartoons in the Arab countries. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't have heard of those cartoons.

                  • Finland sells out even more. Finland is officially the most sold out country by now.

Now the foreign minister is in the media, emphatizing and so cuddly and sooo sorry, writing letters to papers in ME countries. WHO ASKED him to do that? I mean, these guys act on their own, without ANY pressure or threat?

He said he was so glad that no one has published ht pics in here (BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ WRONG! the website thing is under criminal investigation), and all about apologies. The PM already crawled in front of the world. Hey I got news for you ministers.. no one even cares that you did, no one knows! That's how important you are, that's how important we are, so why do you sell us out when the price is 0 gain? IDIOTS!

Damn I'm ashamed... I feel like going to barricades, blast some frekaing Rage Against the Machine and shout what I think about these freedom of press and speech limiting a-holes, without even stakes they do this.. wtf? Self-voluntary hardlining to pressure everyone and apologizing everyone else. **** YOU I didn't elect you! Burn in hell, you don't deserve this job you have, you don't speak for us, and you certainly don't drive our issues and think what is to our benefit. OOOOHh I feel pretty outraged right now.... feel like taking out my old hoodie and go out in the protection of the night sky to blast some words to the walls of this great city. It's serious, people are like Romans here, as long as they have piece of bread and some entertainment, they won't do anything, don't care, don't bother.

Here's my flip off to our leaders! May the lighting strike better this year.

Who are they afraid of?!?!? Our muslim community has been an example of what the majority is. Peaceful, had a peaceful protest, and then we even had a counter protest from Iraqis and few other nationalities who protested against limiting the freedom of speech!!!!! NIce way to stuck it to these guys.. you know where do you think you live? In democracy? Shut up and go back home!

                    • Wow, Italy shows spine
Let's see if he really goes through with it though.

And, after some thinking, I have to remove the Finnish flag, in protest over Finland's selling out.

                        • I dont really understand why Pekka comes to an international forum to whine about the reactions of the politicians and police here in Finland. I'm sure he knows that theres this law in Finland called "Uskonrauha" or "peace among beliefs". Its basically meant to protect peoples religious beliefs. You violate it if you publicly insult or desecrate something that a religious community holds as sacret. In this case the images of Muhammed. I admit its a restriction of free speech but thats irrelevant since its in fact a law. And the police are investigating if this law has now been broken, this is the same reason some politicians are so up beat about it.

They are simply just following the law and acting upon it. What the FM Mr. Tuomioja did was he simply opened a dialogue towards the muslim countries. There was no apologise but a clear condemnation of the violence, and his opinion that deliberately insulting another religion is wrong. I dont see what else could he have written since that is what the law says, and ministers have to act according to the laws.

Personally I think this whole deal about the cartoons is ridiculous, but that the Danish newspaper was foolish to even test the limits, and showed typically naive and wannabe liberal attitude that is so common here in Scandinavia.

There are some limits that shouldnt be tested without a proper reason. The publishing of the cartoons was a bit like little boys being curiois as to what happens if you eat your own **** or something. Sure you can do it but it shows lack of judgement on your part.

                          From HS:

"Krp:n apulaispäällikön Tero Kurenmaan mukaan on syytä epäillä, että kuvia julkaisseet ovat rikkoneet uskonrauhaa. Uskonrauhan rikkomiseen voi syyllistyä, jos julkisesti herjaa tai häpäisee jotakin, mitä uskonnollinen yhdyskunta pitää pyhänä. Profeetta Muhammed on muslimeille pyhä hahmo, jonka kuvallinen esittäminen on islamin mukaan kiellettyä. "
